Greetings from East Sussex!

Post by readyornot »

Hello Everyone

This is my first post , in fact, I think this is the first forum I have ever joined!

I live in East Sussex out in the country and by the coast, and have recently become more interested in being ready and prepared generally, for whatever life may bring. I have the very basics in place, but know I have such a looooong way to go.

I'm particularly interested in learning new survival skills, and am also interested in the preparedness aspect of first aid in emergencies. I've attended basic first aid and resuscitation/defibrillation courses, but in a *htf scenario, I would like to be able to improvise and step up to the plate where necessary, and feel more confident in my ability to do this no matter what craziness may be going on for whatever reason, should normal medical routes be unavailable. I would also like to learn more about self defense, and avoidance, and the psychology of human behaviour in difficult situations.

I've been quite careful to not mention to all but a couple of people around me that I'm preparing for general 'whatever life brings' stuff, but one friend of nearly 20 years told me that she thought I was 'deluded'! I thought it would be so nice to be able to chat with like minded people who 'get it'. :-D

Looking forward to being here :-)

Welcome! It's great that you joined UKP as your first forum! Having the basics in place, and an emphasis on first aid, sounds really sensible - and I think we need to pay a lot more attention to the psychological aspects.

What a shame such a longstanding friend called you deluded :( that's an important bit of psychology right there. I wonder how somebody like that would react if we had another winter like 1962-63, snowed in for weeks, or a winter like a few years ago, with such widespread floods, and *they* were the ones to face it this time?

Anyway, you're up for getting more prepared, and that's great. Welcome to the club.

Hello again, and thank you everyone for your welcomes and hellos! I hope you're all having a fab weekend!

Arzosah...It's quite funny, your comment about wondering how my friend would react if we experienced widespread flooding etc... well the day after your message I was attempting to drive through flooded roads to get to customers houses, with rivers of waters coming at me down roads I was attempting to drive up! I've not spoken to her yet so I don't know how she got on... :-)

Hi Jamesey...yes...it certainly was coming down where I am too! I really hope it didn't cause too any problems for you?! I'm 46, and have lived through a few storms, and generally really love a good thunder and lightning storm, even to the point of looking forward to one! But I have to say that the sheer intensity of the one on Thursday, and having to be out an about working in it, the thunder and lightning that seemed to go on an on, and the volume and speed of flooding (combined with high tide) and at one point fearing I was going to be stranded in a little village with flooded roads in either direction, was enough for me to loose the excitement and begin to feel real fear and respect for the power and danger in nature.

Now it's all drained away, and the grounds drying off, and no long term damage, I think for me, the experience has been really helpful in identifying the gaps in my preparedness!

From now on, I shall be carrying a lot more around with me in my car than my EDC, (eg wellies, towel, change of clothes, more food/water blankets) I shall be ramping things up in my waterprooof clothing, and footwear (mine failed badly). Ooh.. and I shall be looking out for a heating element that plugs into the cigarette lighter of your car as a nice hot brew would have gone down a treat and my stove would have been useless in all that rain. Which leads me on to thinking of packet cup a soups etc etc lol

Also on a positive note..the waterproof phone I bought and had delivered 2 days before the storm held up really well!
