Boats have a tonne of potential and a tonne of negatives also.
When do you go to your boat to get out of the situation at hand, and when you get to the nicely stocked boat will it still be there waiting for you.
It takes no time at all to break into a boat in my opinion, having spent plenty time at a boat yard I am surprised how simple tools would gain access to most boats.
There is also the size problem. A small boat will drive you mad and is not the best for channel crossing. I'd want at least 30 ft for a 2 + 2 family.
I've considered a barge but then unless you go big bucks for something like a Dutch Barge you will have a vessel that wallows like a pig and feeling every peak and trough.
I don't know if you have taken any boating qualifications but you would really need to in my opinion.
I often take my friends 34 footer out with him and it would blow your mind what the different markers on the rivers mean, even before you get out into open water.
Having a boat sitting at berth costs and hauling out every couple of years to de-foul costs my mate circa £600 each time he has to have her winched out the water.
I was looking at sailing over to Jutland this year, sadly a trip that was cancelled, but it is more than a one man at the helm in one of the busiest stretches of water in the world. At least one other member of your party would have to have navigation and basic seamanship skills.
Another thing you would have to keep in mind is what will be waiting for you at your destination.
Boats can be a good idea but it's a complex process.
Whatever, I look forward to reading your ideas.

Hello all,
Thank you for all of your comments. It is genuinely quite overwhelming. With boating there are so many concerns. If travel across the UK is required then travelling by boat across the waterways may be faster than by car not to mention safer!
My biggest concern is not so much the cause of TSHF more the reaction of other people. My concern /plan is to stay as far away from other people as I can (at least to start with). I am sociable lol (honest).
I wouldn't use a boat of any kind for long distance travel, it would be based more around the UK.
Think about day to day travel post SHTF. Travelling along the River Stour would be far easier than driving up the M27! Another advantage would be fishing. I may not be an experienced sailor but I know how to fish extremely well. Looking out for poorly fish would be just as important. Many rivers are close to farms as well. So, access to produce and livestock and quick travel. Sounds like a good idea to me.
One could sleep on the boat, or find land camp on. The more options the better. Also, if you need to travel with equipment and people on low food supplies, you won't be burning as many calories on a boat.
Kind Regards
