New Member -The Ice Man

Post by TheIceMan »

Hello all,

This is my first post on UK -Preppers.co.uk (new member).

A bit about myself. Okay, I am in my twenties, and I am an engineer. I enjoy camping and spening time with my family. I am interested in learning more about Prepping and making new friends, and understanding the correct etiquette of this website :) I am wary of giving too much personal information away, therefore I thought I would start by sharing some of my thoughts.

My thoughts;

I have been thinking about if and when TSHF occurs. Regardless of how it may or might happen, I am concerned about a few things.

Firstly, I have been thinking about nuclear power stations. We saw how the Japanese struggled to contain radiation from Fukushima. If TSHF, the current nuclear plants both in the UK and abroad could struggle if they are not being manned /well maintained due to either a lack of government or lawlessness. They are not like TV's, where they can be switched off in a second. It takes time for them to be de -commissioned.

How does one prepare for such an eventuality? We wont all be lucky enough to find a bunker to hide out in.

Secondly, in a populaton of around 60 million people, I have been thinking a lot about whether there is some form of risk assessment to determine our % likelihood of survival in either rural /urban /coastal regions? Our densely populated areas are going to struggle.

I live on the South Coast, and I am fascinated about how people who lived on this land in years gone by have survived. I would like to get to know people on here.

Many Thanks

Nice intro and you've raised, or perhaps reopened a couple of hot topics on here.

My location is very rural and you would think that's ideal until you look at Hinckley B and C on a map. Built by Chinese, funded by the French....hmmmm...what could go wrong there, I wonder.

The %age figure you're looking for should really come from your own detailed risk assessment of how well and for how long you could hunker down at home or if it all goes pear-shaped at home, how you'd get out of the area.

For me, first and foremost my prepping, or homesteading as I prefer to call it, is focused on reducing my dependancy upon the utility companies and preparing for when their services fail. My secondary planning goes as follows a) If transport failed, how I would get home to where my main preps are b) How long I could stay at home off-grid and c) how and when I decide to up-sticks at home to get to a fallback location.

Perhaps that will start the ball rolling for your own risk assessment and planning. Maybe the best way to start would be to switch off the water and electricity at home and see how you cope for an hour, then three hours. How would you cope for a day, three days, etc etc. I'm pretty sure you'll soon have a list as long as your arm of items you need to get!

Anyway, welcome to the forum, I'm sure you'll find gems of information here mixed up with a lot of light-hearted banter.

Welcome TheiceMan & ditto Briggs 2.0's comment, nice intro.
Sometimes the subject of bug-out-bags are overstated but for your concerns of your intro I'd think about ensuring, as a first step, that you have an emergency bag ready for you and extra for those who you will also want to be able to do a rapid evac with.
That, if you have not already done it, ticks one of the need to do things on the worry about list, the others can then be worked on as knowledge, understanding and recources come your way in the due course of time.
Enjoy the forum.

Welcome :)

And yes, good point, and in general I'd agree that you should be looking around for a less-populated area as either primary loc or as a bug out/back-up option.

Agreed about nuclear concerns, unfortunately I am not too far from one :/
But hopefully at least Fukushima makes Fukushima 2 less likely, plus it was earthquake.

Hello all,

Thank you for the replies and comments.

I have a small bug out bag kit. I am looking at investing in more equipment for both my family and I this weekend.

What I really need to do is buy a decent OS map.

BTW Briggs, I love the Fallout Boy logo (great game).

Another thought I have (but didn't post initially) was regarding seafaring activities in the event of TSHF. Do people talk about boating on this website? With the amount of people we have in the UK, I think that one of the best options would be to (possibly) take to the seas. Water purification, weather forecasting and so forth would be two major concerns.

I am starting work on my RAMS this weekend.

Many Thanks

Lol RAMS stands for risk and method statements not munitions. I am planning for a friendly future WSHF! :D

Welcome, I'm new here myself.
I've often thought that the UK is too small making it harder to get any distance from the population. The sea is a huge barrier and the continent would be a much better possibility. Maybe it's a case of the grass being greener on the other side, but one things for sure, there's more of it.
My prepping consists of bugging out by bicycle so any comments are likely to be based on that scenario.

Thats only sensible, really, even for house fires, but in your particular scenario, crucial, I think. How about the whole potassium iodide debate, where do you stand on that?
What I really need to do is buy a decent OS map.
Definitely!

We do talk about that, but probably not enough - bugging out by sea might be important (look at the people of Pompeii who survived!) fishing, line-setting, collecting limpets, crabs, worms for bait, even finding shallow sea pools to evaporate for salt, using seawater as "first wash" for really dirty clothes ... there's lots!
I am starting work on my RAMS this weekend.
I'm glad to hear what your version stood for!

Good luck on your shopping expedition this weekend, let us know how it went.
