I would add a book on foraging - that would be essential

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Food-For-Free-C ... 0007183038

Then something to gather all the foraged food in! :D

Apps are excellent for this. The apps for fungi are particularly good. Obviously charging up the computer may be a problem. Go out and use them. Learn in other words. Thinking a book or app is any use without putting them into use before you need them will improve your ability by leaps and bounds.

Prior knowledge is good. Learn to use the books now and also get to know your local areas. Note where (and when) mushrooms come up , where fruit and nut trees and bushes are , which waterways have decent fish and what sort of animals are available . Maybe look at attracting birds to your garden to trap .

Not at all to detract from what you say, it's all valid and good... I just chuckle at the last bit - Birds avoid my garden like the plague, may have something to do with 3 cats wanting to trap them ;)
Entirely certain that nothing is certain

I shoot wood pigeons during the summer with an air rifle. Need game pellets. Basically a decent weight. Around 18 grains for pigeons. Air arms Diabelo field are very good for pigeons. £12.99 for 500. Stockings up won't cost you a lot. 30+ grains for rabbits (head shot). Although I think snaring for rabbits and even deer is good option. Don't assume you will be any good at the latter as it is a skill you develop over years. Deskill it create funnel points ie create a gap in a fence just wide enough for them to go through and plant a snare.

Cats have no possible use in catastrophic event. I would kill them or dump them along way from your house. I don't think wood pigeons would be to worried by cats. Any pigeon in fact. Also move into a bungalow it is easy to shoot them of the ridge tiles. The latter maybe going to far!

Thanks mate I am going to look into getting an air rifle of my own my dad has one and I've shot a few things with it, I never even considered using special ammo so good advice! I have been snaring for a wee while when I was younger I can pick out places where I can see animals have been walking through the fence! Can you buy snares online does anybody know??
