Useful shops - Totnes

Post by Mr R »

Obviously it is not a shop, but the Friday and Saturday market in Totnes, is well worth a visit.

As it was raining heavily today, it was a bit of a disappointment, but generally you can buy some very cheap, but good quality, second-hand tools etc., there. Note that if you are after tools, only go there on a 'good weather day'. There are a few hardware traders there, but only one has his products at a reasonable price - however, if it is raining, he stays at home!

And while you are there, visit this shop - the best pies in the area:

This is one of the few places that sells a proper game pie, during the winter months - marvelous!!

Its a shame that camping / outdoors shop has gone (above the clock tower)

that hardware shop up top which is just before where the camping shop was sometimes has some bargains in if you dig about :)

Do you mean the camping shop at the top end of the High Street? If so, yes it was a shame that it closed. I bought my Victorinox watchmakers 'penknife' from there - the only shop that made the effort to find and order one for me.

I haven't noticed the hardware shop before - or perhaps I have, but can't remember it! I will have a wander up there, the next time that I visit.

I'd heard Totnes was a good place for hippies
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

 It's full of them, but at least they are friendly! I visited the market there, again, on Friday and bought a very good quality second-hand axe for £5 - and two pies and a steak pasty from Riverford! :D

They're still in Plymouth I think, there's a brilliant little airgun/knife/survivalist shop in the outer part of Plymouth market, he was a second hand shop/all the cool stuff, but this weekend they've changed the name from "buy it sell it" to "Pull the trigger" I'm too skint to do them much good but I go in for a natter all the time, point is it's a prepper blokes paradise (they've got some pink knives too to be fair) type in "buy it sell it" Plymouth on the dreaded facebook and you'll see what I mean

I think it is a sign of the times that these guys have gone from strength to strength this last year or so and have gone the whole gun/survivalshop hog, on the one hand it is a bit scary, but on the other it does mean people are cottoning ( showing my roots there Andy) on that being prepared is a good idea, sure for most of us the priority has to be a shed load of everyday value food and the domestic like, but for your EDC/BOB items gadgets and yes pointy things and firearms this sort of shop is an old mans toy shop

There's a very good 'outdoors' shop, called 'Camouflage', just outside of Paignton:

I have walked passed this shop dozens of times and not looked inside - not sure why not, as it looks like the sort of shop that I could spend a day in! I'll have a peruse next week.
