bug out fitness!

Post by dave81 »

Ok so I work in a gym part time running a boxing class but I often watch theses vids on youtube to get ideas etc of BOB items etc now most of the guys making these vids couldnt walk a mile with there gear on there back by the looks of them because they are to fat! Im not being mean its just what I see. Now this got me thinking, if I was to run a BUG OUT FITNESS AND STRENGH class, how many would be intrested? It would be aimed at being able to wear your bob and have the fitness to keep walking and climb over/under obstacles and also in turn you'd build a competitive and a no lose attiude! I'd run them on parks in the nottingham area. So whos intrested?

"Yeah, but is he good with weight"

I hear that almost weekly. A 19 year old in shorts and vest might be able to run a mile in 4 mins but... Who goes to battle in vest & shorts?

I think that it would be a more positive move to do a few lengthy blogs in the food / nutrition section about fitness for all of us. Now we might be great at starting a fire, shooting an elastic powered catapult and prepping the dreaded Mung Bean for dinner, but how much of this forum is actually dedicated to fitness and what one can do (especially on a budget) to start building a good reliable fitness routine into our lives?

I have recently seen the benefits of fitness as being something I truly need to work on and so I got myself a cheap cross trainer off of ebay and have stared using it for one hour every day. Different resistances, speeds, forwards, backwards, different postures, hands free, one arm at a time and all sorts and I am starting to feel some basic bodily development.

I have a good idea about where I want to go and am trying to build a few routines around that and am slowly getting more equipment together. BUT, if you are a good instructor and you know that your knowledge is needed here, as well as providing that traditional trainer thing that you can sell one on one, what about teaching HERE? after all, we do tend to share our knowledge and progress with various different projects here for FREE too as well as sell things that we have made once in awhile on sites such as ETSY etc.....

For instance i have seen videos on youtube about making waterbags to act as cheap dumbells for outdoor workouts, the use of a friend and a bin bag (to act like a rope) to create a makeshift weight workout, but what about aerobic workout? how to get the discipline together, motivation, the right mindset, what to avoid ("gear") what to be careful of (posture) an how to refine these things. How to manage diet, vitamin and mineral intake, protein, cheap sources of protein (tesco value kidney beans got 16g per tin!) and what the best sources, both popular and hypoallergenic (hemp protein), are for extra protein supplementation.

On top of that, how a person can do typical exercises that one would normally need a machine for at a gym, how to to 5 day split training and the like. What is meant by "rest", how to use fringe sports science ideas such as meditation to increase ones edge.

I am sure I wouldn't be the only one who would be hungry for the knowledge that you have got.

I got a gym ball for a couple of quid and a fortnight of sit ups 3 times a day you'll notice a hell of a difference.
For cheap weights I filled 2x 5L sauce/floor cleaner containers with water & glued shut, a little tape around the handles to cover their rough seal and BOOM, 2 free kettle bells.

Go around your familiar foraging routes at a fast walking stride and run up the hills at least 3 times a week and the weight will fall off you. Far easier if you have a dog to walk as you lack an excuse to stay inside. When child minding I take the nephew with me to tire him out too so I don't have a hyper child and dog chasing each other round the house howling & wailing as they go.

The hardest part is picking up the new habits but finding ways of moving more that you enjoy makes it a lot easier to keep at.
Personally I get the same wake up from 5 minutes of dumbbells as I do from a double espresso, and jogging is depressingly boring, but a quick paced walk round the woods, jumping around or over obstacles & tackling the hills is fun.

I quite like sound of that but I'm in the South West. I'm 6 miles from my BOL, it's a fairly easy walk on the road but cross country, you're right, an overweight BOB would be a hindrance. I'd say getting the right BOB that fits well is just as important as fitness. I'm quite new to the forum, is there a thread for BOBs and their contents? Getting the BOB weight down and doing a class like you suggest would be a good idea.
I recently experienced Plymouth City centre so that's why I prep.

Briggs, just look under the equipment section, particularly EDC,BOB,GHB.
There's plenty to get on with there.

As for the actual bag itself, a few things to bare in mind are:
Neutral, dull, natural,colour
The bigger it is the more you will fill it
Comfort, comfort & comfort

I think the concept of bugging out is over hyped from a UK prospective, really there is no great wilderness where everyone will magically have everything they need. Realistically the only time most will leave, is if their home is no longer viable, i.e. under attack or no longer any food in the area and a need to migrate.

Fitness from a health standpoint is really more important than being able to carry your body weight on your back. Health is one of the few things that doesn't need cost you any money and will help you throughout your life. Lets be realistic if you are fat its a personal choice, as no one forces you to consume more than your body needs in calories everyday. If you are unfit that can be due to many things including injuries, past or present and other health issues, or indeed laziness.

As arguable as things like the BMI is, you should really be within the healthy range, most local doctors have machines that automatically check blood pressure and such and give you a printed read out, again this should be within a healthy range for your age. Basic exercise helps prevent depression and many other health issues, you really don't need to be an olympic class athlete, but people shouldn't be an unnecessary drain on resources.

Simply try walking or riding a bike to local appointments, it will save you money as well. The number one thing with being healthy/fit is diet, you may eat loads of healthy veg, nut and meat, or be vegan but if you are consuming too many calories you will still get fat. Then again you can eat like a horse if you exercise a huge amount.

Just do a treat day once a month where you gorge yourself on pizza/junk food if you have too, you really will not miss it for a while and after a week or two you will be looking forward to the next treat day.
