Wild man Wild Food

Post by Carrot Cruncher »

I came across this site a year or so back http://www.wildmanwildfood.com/

Quite an intersting chap with lots of excellent info on foraging .....and going back to the point AJC made on another thread about some prepper subjects not being "exciting", I think this is one of those subjects. Knowing how to feed yourself or supplement your food stocks from the woods and hedgerows could be a lifesaver even in urban environments

He also has one part on the site that is a kind of diary where he tries to live off foraged food for a month http://www.wildmanwildfood.com/pages/day%201.html, Day one is at the bottom of the page, last day at the top.

The point he makes on day one I found interesting
I could just eat a bowl of soup a day for a month and survive quite adequately. Nevertheless, that wouldn’t really be rising to the wild food challenge. No, the real challenge lies in attempting to eat relatively normally in terms of a varied breakfast, lunch and dinner every day.
Now my foraging skills are next to useless and something I need to work on. I would probably poison myself within a day even if I was just making soup.

Do we have any foragers on here? and if so, what advice would they give to a newcomer to the subject

Get a good book, with pics. Anything edible can go into soup and soup is terrific stuff. But you need the book to tell you what is edible. Also, as well as just foraging, try to think of new combinations of foods. Cranachan is a Scots dessert of wild berries, toasted oats, and a wee slug of something 90% proof to liven it up
Anybody can carry a wee bag of porridge oats, and it adds substance to a few berries that on their own wouldnt fill you. Then if you have some whisky, bung it in and that perks you up. Turns a few berries into a proper pudding LOL!
