Prepping for trips abroad

I'm already here and I feel naked without any of my usual tools which I have already needed some and not had.

Obviously planes have restrictions but does anyone else have experience of dealing with it once they are at their destination?

First aid kit/foil blanket compass etc fine but I wouldn't take anything that might be construed as a weapon (except swiss army knife in hold). It depends on where you are of course but if you felt you needed anything legal you could always buy one at your destination and chuck at end of trip?
