I would ensure that you have a small torch somewhere in your backpack. I know high schools don't allow Mobile phones but having one hidden away (a secret pocket in the lining of your bag) would be good plus some spare money.

I do know of someone who stitched away a small Swiss Army knife in their sons backpack but that is too risky so, as a parent, I would say no.

A bottle is water at all times, snack eg cereal bar, bandana ( to be used as a temp face covering in case of fire), waterproof coat. In colder weather some reusable handwarmers.

If you have a locker keep some decent walking shoes in there in case you need to walk any distance home.

HTH.

Is a maglite sufficent?
My school allows phones, so im fine on that aspect.
I think taking a SAK is abit too risky.
I always carry a 1.75ltr bottle with me.
I will take a snack, cereal bar and a bandana with me tommorow.
I will look for some rewarmable hand warmers as it is getting colder.
I think i can fit my combat boots in my bag.
Thanks

Carrying your combat boots will make your bag very heavy.

Next time you need to buy school shoes look for good quality walking shoes that will pass the uniform code for your school. That way you are wearing them all the time.

I'd say whatever you carry keep it secret, and that you have a good idea as it stands, but I have to ask, how far roughly school to home? if it's along way maybe a secret stash of stuff you could pick up if you need to, and what about a personal attack alarm, teenagers whatever sex can be vulnerable to attack even in normal times, even if you are clued up in terms of self defence, an alarm is still useful.
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

to help with the shoes, ask your parents to buy you Doc martin shoes ( not the boots) they are a very sturdy shoe and have excellent soles for comfort and grip, will take a beating and also reasonably water tight

plus side is they last forever....

i buy them for my son and he uses one pair a year which is impressive

My children (11 and 13) each carry a mobile phone, maglite solitaire, water bottle, mobile phone, bar of chocolate, appropriate clothes for the weather and, in winter, hand warmers.

Hadn't thought of a bandana before, thanks.
