Hi Feegle.

Unless you plan on 'rotating' your water for a fresh supply at regular intervals, I would respectfully suggest (if you haven't stored some with your food stock) water purification chlorine chem-tabs to sanitise the water if it has been stood for a long period of time. Depending on their strength, they usually sanitise 1 ltr per tab so you will need at least 25 tabs per barrel. This will increase the viability of the water stores for extended periods.

Apologies if it sounds like I'm giving you an 'egg sucking' lesson but I trust the barrels are food grade?

NB: If you go down the route of chem-tabs, be aware of their sell by date as I've been caught out before. Another option could be purchasing a water purification hand pump or filter straw?

If you feel that the area you live in warrants you to cache items, then carry on I say.

Only you can decide when and if that's enough to of stored.

Other people's thoughts may vary, but always good to have triple redundancies. :D
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

I'm sure its a good idea sometimes ... it depends where you are in relation to other preps you need to make, I suppose ...

a cache is always a good idea , you never know what might happen and keeping all your eggs in one basket is never a good idea

I think it's an excellent idea - especially having multiple locations.

I would be overly concerned about rotating the water. Its sealed and out of sunlight so should be fine. You could add a few drops of chlorine bleach before storage as a jic. The only real risk would be legionella so don't mist it and start inhaling and youll be fine. I'd save the puritabs for water you dont know the origin of...

Certainly caches are a good idea, particularly if you forsee havibg to make youre way somewhere in an emergency ie no transport home from work. having a stash or two on tge route you would take would be ideal. However i would make sure you have adequate at home first as you dont want to be stuck there dreaming about your lovely full caches ;)

Caches. Very good idea IMHO but think them through, properly!

Sometimes it's very easy to post on forums with your successes, I'm as guilty of that as most. However, there's also great value in posting about something you didn't do quite so well.....

When I started prepping and heard about caches I thought they were a fantastic idea, so much so I set some up in my immediate locale and more within about 5 mile radius of my home. Felt really chuffed with myself and ticked off another box.

Fast forward a year or two and made the decision to check on the condition of the outlying caches I had made. It suddenly occurred to me that I had placed some of them in locations that I wouldn't be passing in a bug out scenario and I certainly wouldn't be wasting the fuel to collect them (vs what was in them) just to top up preps at home. So, I collected some of them in and replaced them in more useful locations.

Plan it properly from the outset and don't waste your time and energy doing what I did the first time
