Hi Everone

Post by greebo »

Hello, I'm Jackie I live near Manchester I'm married, and have four children. I'm new to prepping, I've been thinking about it a lot the past few years, ideas like where i would go what i would do if something happens and this just dosn't seem like enough, we are a low income family, which in my eyes seemed to be even more reason to change our lifestyle, we used to eat mainly frozen 'easy' foods but since stepping up my prepping ive been making wonderful stews and broths etc. from tins, dried foods and fresh products. I had never even looked at split peas and beans before! After doing some on-line research I have made many changes to our lives. Although I have to admit I thought my husband was going to think I was a bit loopy, instead he has embraced it as much as me fitting new homemade shelves for storage etc. I'm even trying to quit smoking and get more active, as I feel it should be a lifestyle change rather than having a cupboard full of food. A lot of the online info says i should involve my friends, but I am a little wary of letting people know, if something did happen, and they at the time of me telling them thought I was silly and did no prepping themselves, would know I had stores surely this is a risk for me and my family any info or ideas greatly appreciated Jackie

Hello and welcome to the forum.

We keep our preps quiet and encourage our children not to anything as well. That is very important.
It's good that your OH is on board. Mine took about 2 years to 'get'what I was doing.

Lots to read on the forum. Have a good mooch around, any questions just ask!

Welcome to the forum! Brilliant to hear that you're eating more healthily because of finding peas and beans, thats great. And just as good is that you're trying to give up smoking - hope you're getting all the help the NHS can offer with that. Its important from *so* many angles, as you're aware, I'm sure - health (you *and* your children), money, fitness, preparedness - imagine if things went really wrong in this country and you were trying to deal with it doing cold turkey from cigarettes!!! Horrible!

You're absolutely right that prepping isn't just about a cupboard full of food, nice tho it is to have that. Its about attitudes. I haven't told anybody in my real life that I'm a prepper, no one at all. I've mentioned a few things I've found online to my sister, who was interested and said how sensible it was, and thats all. Talking of attitudes, how lovely that your OH is onboard even now - that makes the journey a lot easier, and maybe a lot more fun too, as you learn to do things together.

Hi  also wartime cookery books are terrific - they were short of everything and still managed to cope, you get lots of ideas in them.
