Guys (and girls!),

I was wondering if you could help me, I'm at that age where I'm looking to plan for the long term future aside from having a BOB.

At the moment, I'm living in rented accomodation and about to move in with a friend which is miles cheaper and allow me to save a large amount of my wages. (I was worried about hiding my BOB in the house, etc but it turns out he's a prepper! ).

Anyway, I was possibly thinking of saving up and buying some land, maybe some woodland somewhere as it's alot cheaper than buying a house.

If I did end up buying something like the attached link, would you think theirs scope to make a success out of it? And what sort of things would I be able to do on it? For example, build a BOL?

I know this sounds vague, but wondering if it would be worth doing some major research.

If you’re talking financial success there are endless possibilities;

Personally I wouldn’t want to get into anything like timber farming, I’d assume it’s a lot like any other commercial agriculture, with all the same pitfalls.

Now if you go into ‘something a bit different’ (Bushcraft training, paintballing, free range organic wild boar), statistically you probably will fail, but it you can crack it.............

They are pretty restrictive about what you can and can’t build, here's what they say on that website;

Can I build a house on my woodland?

Almost certainly not: you will not get planning permission. We have a very good article on planning in woodlands by Lucy Nichol.

Even in the exceptional cases of owners gaining permission to build houses in their woods these have occurred only where people worked their woodlands for many years and shown that this was their main source of income.

Can I build anything?

Yes, certain things, but only for forestry purposes. There is a notification process, requiring you to tell the local authority before you start. Many of our buyers have built forestry stores and some use these as shelters to store a variety of wood-related equipment.

Used to live in Cannada, the big log houses (foot or so in diamiter) last for years. Are great for insulaton, and acutally tougher than normal brick.

From what I can tell from reading about panning development in a forest is it is very difficult / nearly impossible to get planning permission to build a house but a structure which falls under the Caravan Sites Act 1968 you dot need planning permission as long as it is not used as residential use

now my limited thinking is something like a portacabin ( which if I am reading this correctly falls under the caravan site act ) could be an office , loo , store but as bushmen and women we may not be living there as a residential site but as a recreational site am sure there is a legal argument one way or the other

But it is something I would like to do in the future and who knows by then laws may change , they are already relaxing laws to build on green belt sites so heres hopeing

So, am I right in the impression that I could say put in a small log cabin/portacabin as a tempory store for equipment to help manage the forest?

Then, if SHTF, be a place to bug out to?

What about building a concealed place? What would be the implications be if in theory you decided to say, construct a bunker (small one, not for hundreds..just yet haha!) and then it was found?

Worst case if you fall foul of planning is that they can make you take out the structure or charge you the cost of them taking it out. Fancy one of those buried shipping container shelters myself.

Make sure it isn't found.Don't blab about it on the Internet or anywhere else -at all.

And make sure no one sees you taking materials into the woodland to make your 'dwelling'.
