Hello from Cornwall

Post by dizzydays »

Hi all,

I'm right down near Penzance in Cornwall, originally from Manchester, and well - I'm brand spanking new to this. I've been prepping for ...oooh....about 3 weeks now - try not to laugh too loud !
Obviously I'm well behind you guys but here's where I'm up to. I've no storage room so that's taken a bit of thinking about. There really isn't much chance of storing bulk food here but I'm a couple of mins from a farm shop with a pretty big supply of all the grains/beans/pastas. I reckon that WTSHTF I will nip there while everyone else clogs up Tesco.
Whilst considering food I discovered Sprouting Seeds - so I've started off a few trial runs. I've had allotments in the past but now I've no real garden so I'm doing what I can with containers/baskets.

I've got a multi fuel stove and a shed for wood/coal. Was sorting out some oil lamps online but just spent the money on a nifty ABS door lock which someone on here mentioned. Hope I've measured it correctly and can fit it myself. Have to get the lamps next month.

Am prepping a BOB which is minimal at the moment but started, and I've learned fire making with a fire steel as my first skill ! Stocked up on Vitamins and some Kelp thanks to H & B's half price sale.
Sorry it's all a bit 'headless chicken' at the moment! Hope you'll let me in. I've got chocolate.....

Chocolate - you're learning quick!!!! :D

Take your time and don't get too overwhelmed. Just think, you're ahead of the game by just thinking you need to prep and now you've made a start.
Good to have you on board.

Feel free to ask any questions, even if you think its silly - we've all been there and if its important to you then it matters.

Hi Dizzy, I'm in Manchester.

Why don't you all come back here and we can form a Manc preppers' group? ;)

I was a complete newbie this time last year, too. You have to try not to panic, quell that feeling that you need everything NOW, and start small. The advice I read was to focus on getting a month's supplies in place first, and to concentrate on water (since without potable water we won't last very long), food and shelter. Could you fix some guttering along the wood/coal shed and connect it to a waterbutt? Then get a water filter to purify it with. That would be a good start. I have fixed guttering along my chicken pen and collected nearly 200 litres of water in the last three weeks.

Anyway, settle in, read lots and ask any questions you want. The only stupid question is the one that isn't asked!

Thanks for the welcomes - I knew the chocolate would swing it (see - I'm learing bartering already!)

Water butt is a good idea. I could probably find a trusty mate to help me with that. Umm....can I not just find a stream and boil some of that up?
