Usage for Hip Flask?

Post by FlashPan »

I just rediscovered a 5oz stainless steel hip flask I bought a long time ago from Tiger.

Made from stainless steel and the only plastic part is the bracket to hold the screw lid to the main body.

I filled this up about 8 years ago with some cheap brandy and let it be until now.

Not being a big dark spirit drinker I cannot say how this faired over the years. Emptying it into a glass I could see a couple bits of gunk/cloudiness but is still tasted ok to me. I do remember cleaning the flask thoroughly with hot water and sterident way back when.

I think the brandy may still have been ok after this time but has now made me think what else can these be used for?

Am thinking gel fuels?

Any other thought of other uses? or experiences?

Considering you can find these on the bay for £2 or £3 not a bad small robust container I reckon.

Cheers

I almost always carry one if I'm camping out, especially if it's going to be cold, mine is usually full of scotch but I often take blackberry whisky too, a nip of something is rather comforting if you've been rained on!

As for using it for other things, I think gel fuel would be a bit of a pig to get in it, and also get out again, they have a pretty narrow neck, but bioethanol or meths would probably go in ok, just make sure it's labelled as you don't want anyone to take a swig or use it for anything else afterwards!

One thing I've found with some cheap ones though, the seal in the cap is sometimes made from weird foam stuff, and I would think it would be safe since they're designed to contain alcohol, but I'm not sure I'd trust it so if you're planning on putting in something that's flammable enough to use as fuel then it might be worth replacing with some of the squishy silicon stuff.

Going 'off piste', I use piss sample bottles for things like veg oil and washing up liquid. I've also got some smaller ones that are were liberated from a lab that I keep herbs and spices in if I'm camping/walking.

Ahh...now then.... oil may be a good idea. For cooking, knife sharpening and such. I think meths eat through stainless steel?....correct me if I am wrong. As for bio fuel cannot say. What about the white fuel gel stuff for a bbq you can get from homebase/wilko?

Of course I still think keeping some medicinal brandy is a good idea. Keeping you warm, cleaning a wound, cleaning a blade/needle, flavour for food/cooking, type of fire excelerant (sorry cannot spell that right)

@ Deeps..I've a couple of the pee specimen bottles you talk about as well (I guess you were not taking the piste ;) ). I keep the little ikea pencils in them.

No mate, piss bottles are designed to be pretty sturdy, nobody wants a breakage. A good size and shape to fit where you can too.

I'd use the hip flasks for what God, nature and the manufacturers want though, handy for putting dirty booze in.

I've picked up various containers along the way that look useful but are still awaiting their first assignment, I'm a bloody oddball though. :D

I have several stainless hip flasks, from 1oz upwards. I have used one for meths for a trangia and now for a beercan stove in my EDC. The problem I now have is, if I take more than one out in the dark, is it brandy or meths Im going to be drinking ? I think the old DYMO embossed tape printer may have to make a re appearance to give me some brail style ID on them.

If you do accidentally drink the meths then neck the brandy, the cure for methanol poisoning is ethanol! :)

i must be a professional piste artist, i keep my booze in a 500ml fuel bottle.
i need to look into these sample bottles for herbs etc. the amount of stuff i carry is daft. must downscale.
