real life prep situation in jamaica

hello everyone this is my first post,,,
have been prepping for quite a while now and recently had to put my skills to the test.
A few weeks ago we arrived in Jamaica for our holidays ,all was good for the first 2 days then we where told that we would get the tail end of hurricane jaoquin and nothing to worry about we get them all the time..straight away i was thinking what if.
The next day we woke up to the sound of howling wind and torrential rain,looking out the window i could not believe my eyes ,waves lashing the beautiful beach ,palm trees bent double,it was just a mess..
We had a phone call saying there may be some disruption to the electricity supply as trees where falling down around the island and this would affect the water supply as the pumps are all electric..
Up on hearing this from my missus i jumped up and got dressed she said what you doing (prepping ) i said just in case..
i went to the restaurant and collected some candles and as much food as i could carry and took them back to our room.
i stole 2 buckets from the painters and filled with pool water and took them back,(what are they for she said)il tell you if i need to..
Later that day the power went off and it was total chaos people running around like ants demanding this that and the other only to be told we are doing all we can..
I went to reception and asked if we had an emergency generator only to be told they are trying to start it but it wont fire up.I asked when was the generator last used she said last time the power went out .....i said shouldn't you check it every Monday morning in case this happens ,no she said it would cost too much fuel to do that.OMG.i just couldn't believe what i was hearing.
Later that day my missus shouted me from the bathroom to tell me that the water was also off now and she had gone for a number 2 and it was still sitting there.Ok i said remember the 2 buckets of pool water use one to flush it.i cant pick them up can you come and do it but you will have to close your eyes.WHAT i said .I dont want you to see my poo ok i said but you will have to guide me.talk about laugh.
Later that day my missus was sat head in hands ..whats wrong now love...ive just realised i cant dry my hair tonight ..i couldnt believe what i was hearing.We are in a real life crisis and all you can think about is hiding your poo and drying your hair.
We stayed up most of the night playing cards by candle light ,i couldn't help keep having a chuckle to my self.
The next day power was restored and water was on and the ants where happy.
My missus now understands and appreciates why i prep .

Turned out nice again. I've been in similar short term predicaments overseas. Scary as hell. Same can easily happen here.

And more often than not you get tuts of dis-satisfaction for your "over the top" actions..... but when TSHTF you come up smelling of roses

At this point is where "show me where it is?!" would be mentioned ive dabbled with various petrol and diesel generator sets over the years and often its a very simple fix / clean a few bits to get them fired up.. Its amazing what you can do with a leatherman


My boss at work went on a coach trip and the coach broke down in the middle of nowhere ... he stuck his ore in with the driver and ended up been given a few bottles of wine and spirits courtosy of the bus company



On the subject of the toilet it must have been a big one to need a full bucket



I take a few preps abroad for hotel stays.. Leatherman Blast, led lenser torch, sawyer mini water filter, duct tape, cable ties, decent First aid kit and a lighter takes up next to no room in my suitcase

thanks for the replies guys oh and i forgot to mention during the power cut my other half opened the fridge door only to find her stash of chocolate had melted and her reply to this was ...i dont believe this mi chocolates melted thats it im off up to reception.i cant deal with this.,,,sorry but i just fell about laughing .god only knows what she would be like in very bad situation..

I was on a bit of a soire in Gibraltar a couple of weekends back and only taking hand luggage. I was getting the sweats having to leave some of my bits and bobs behind. I even considered buying a SAK over there and posting it home after the 3 days I was there. Fortunately the zombies took the weekend off and it all ended happily ever after. I'm a bugger for tossing extra 'stuff' into bags when we go anywhere, if I'm not getting the rolling eye's then I keep going.
