Is this a damson?

Post by preparedsurrey »

Spotted these whilst out blackberrying today as well as a few raspberry canes

am I correct thinking they are they damsons? Fruit has green flesh with a large stone and the juice is reasonably bitter. Are they nice for anything other than damson gin/ vodka?

Thank you

That's possibly a sloe berry. The way to check is if the branches have thorns as the bush will be a blackthorn.

If it's sloe, then sloe gin and then use the left over berries to make sloe chocolates.

If it's damsons then jam, damson cheese and damson chutney.

Look in any hedgerow right now and you will find them. Cannot mistake them for anything else. Plus they grow on wicked thorny branches.

Best picked after the first frost but they will probably be all picked by then.

Instead pick and put them in the freezer, defrost them so when you make your gin/vodka you don't need to spend hours pricking holes in them.
