Sleeping roll. Store separately or together?

Post by Trawlerman »

So now i've got Sleeping Bag / Bivvy / Liner / Inflatable Mat / Foam Mat.

Should I put the whole combo together in one stuff/compression sack or should I keep it all in their separate stuff sacks? The foam mat is not that important but as I have it, it could be used as another layer to keep the ground from sapping my body heat.

The idea of strapping multiple pieces of bedroll to my bag sounds like a nightmare so I wanna make things as easy as I can.

Mat rolled up on the outside or around the perimeter on the inside, forming a cavity for the rest of the kit. Bivvy bag in its pouch. Sleeping bag - that depends - some of them need to be hung up unrolled while in storage.

Packing your bergen, as stated by featherstick - roll mat on inside forming a cavity, then stuff everything else into your bivvy bag.

No need for dry bags, that's what the bivvy bag does. :)

For storage, sleeping bags and inflatable mats get stored unrolled and flat.

I do not want to teach anybody to suck eggs, but on the move the sleeping bag should already be in the bivvi bag, and don't forget when bedding down to put the rollmat in the bivvi bag as well, this prevents dampt seeping through even the most decent bag.

Oh wait, we're not on Ops are we...

getting old, as said before a lot of civvie nice bags will need to be hung when not in packed on the go, or you spend 2 nights fighting the cold spots.

It depends on the size of your bag, if you are using an army size backpack then i put sleeping bag in bivi and stuff it in backpack, a foam mat can be cut to 2/3 folded in 4 and put under top flap. If using a smaller bag i put sleeping bag in compression bag then in bivi bag to keep dry. a survival bag stuffed with debris works well.
