Well, only a few weeks into this so it's more holes than substance really. Just discovered my two biggest problems though.
1. Lack of a cold compress - bags of frozen peas really don't work that well in reality.
2. Lack of storage space. If I'd had the storage space I wouldn't have been balanced on a stool trying to make space. Hence I wouldnt have fallen off the stool and realised my first aid kit is a bit lacking!!

Sometimes it the little things/emergencies that make us realise where the holes are. At least now you can start to put it right!dizzydays wrote:Well, only a few weeks into this so it's more holes than substance really. Just discovered my two biggest problems though.

9 tins will feed you and the other half for 1 day!!!!!!!
That is 4 and a half days for me and wifey.
Food is without doubt the most important thing and you can never have enough. Storage is all down to mindset. Go round your house and think outside the box. I have food stashed in the bottom of my wardrobe, in an ottaman, on top of cupboards, in the attic, under the stairs, etc,
As long as you have a roof over your head and a way to purify water all you need to worry about is food (and mutant zombie bikers from hell). Everything else is a bonus.
The family thing is a huge problem. Me and wifey could survive for a few months on our own. As soon as the kids and grandkids turn up we would be lucky to last a week.
By the way, chocolate is classed as food!!!
Be lucky

Only 300 calories in a tin of baked beans, 200 calories in a can of heinz tomato soup. Even a can of tinned hotdogs (x 8 sausages) is only 250 calories per can. Normal input is 2000 to 2,400 calories per day = a hell of a lot of beans and soup or a pretty drastic diet plan9 tins will feed you and the other half for 1 day!!!!!!!

Re: Whats the biggest hole in your preps
I never eat breakfast, lunch, if i decide to have any is usually a couple of rounds of toast or a butty and tea can be anything from beans on toast to a roast dinner.
I aint losing any weight so I guess I can survive quite happily on that a day and I am 16 stones.
I went on the Weight watchers diet last year and lost 2 stones. I have never eaten so much in my life. I was struggling to eat my points every day. 3 meals a day and making up the points with treats at night. Not sure how that works, a mystery to me.
I will certainly be rationing myself in a SHTF situation but I don't eat that much now so it will interesting to say the least. I guess being a bit over weight might be an advantage after the solids have hit the air conditioning as long as I don't have to bug out on foot.
Be lucky ( and fat )

I don't know how to drive (and can't afford lessons never mind a car), so I don't know what we'd do if we had to leave... particularly since my best friend (with whom I live) is chronically ill and her mother who also lives with us has just gone into relapse with her cancer. I think medical supplies and a way out of here if we had to escape are my biggest holes. No idea what the solution could be for those either!

Do you have any friends who might be able to give lessons in return for a skill you have to offer(bartering)? That way you can get used to being in a car and itshtf and you can 'get' a car, it gets you and your own out of dodge.Teapot wrote:I don't know how to drive (and can't afford lessons never mind a car), so I don't know what we'd do if we had to leave... particularly since my best friend (with whom I live) is chronically ill and her mother who also lives with us has just gone into relapse with her cancer. Medicine is a tricky one - you could always ask the doc for a slight extra just in case you can't get to the sugery/chemist to pick up a prescription for the ones you care for. Do that every now and again and you'll soon have a little stock.
Are the people you care for on board with prepping?

You can get a monthly prescription every 3 weeks without them noticing. usually.
