BOOTSALE FINDS
Re: BOOTSALE FINDS
Cor ... I'm experiencing boot sale envy
I'm currently on the hunt for meths or bio-ethanol to fuel my little hobo stove ... I don't suppose much meths is sold at boot sales, is it

Re: BOOTSALE FINDS
Thats what my original one looks like from 30 years ago
excellent.
I found my bio-ethanol - not as much as I wanted, but I explored a new patch of countryside too, and some chocolate fell into my bag, so that was a result

Gcp... Handy things those old Gaz stoves. The one thing you need to watch is the seal around the spike, if thats bad you'll be leaking gas all the time (I had one that did that once, put a new cartridge one day and find its empty the next
.....Not to mention the danger of gas, tents and being a smoker
)...... Yours however, doesn't seem to have that problem

Re: BOOTSALE FINDS
so, hi ya'll, its been a while, bit of trouble at work and the usual school holidays and life stuff, but it didnt stop me prepping, in fact it got me more focused.
The bootsales were a must, i have found a few nice bits and pieces, these are the latest, ive been thinking about archery for a while now and the fact my wife is also up for it and a friend and i have been watching all the "how to make a longbow" videos on the Tube, i was very glad to find this little lit for a £1.
They are all 4' long all made in England! and all i expect from the 70's, one is from Lillywhites made by Slazenger and one is Jaques of london (ive sent them pics to see if the can give me a date as the dont do archery sets anymore, H&S gone mad).
Only the 3rd one has a string and its just string, they are all flat bows apart from the Jaques one which is more like a mini longbow is construction.
So my question is, does anyone know the best way to determin the right string length, one has the symbal showing the draw weight and i assume the draw length, so these are for kids, or just not meant to be too powerful.
And the arrows are all wood, all have metal tips and fether fletchings, but none have all three anymore.

Re: BOOTSALE FINDS
Munchh: You're right, those are probably low powered children's bows with simple practice arrows and a couple of tabs (the leather things with holes in)
If I'm reading the stamp correctly its a four foot bow giving 10 lbs draw-weight at 20 inches....... So, probably a bit light for you and Mrs Munchh.
BTW, the correct string length is a bit of a fuzzy answer as 'it depends'. But you can get it roughly right by measuring nock to nock (the grooves where the string fits) and subtracting three to four inches

Re: BOOTSALE FINDS
haha, i've missed you my friend.
not bad for a quid though, the arrows are lovely, so they will be ok for the kids, i'm gutted as the 4th from the left is the one most longbow like, you can see a string wrapped around it, i was hoping thats all it was, but it was hiding a break.
The first one needs the palm glueing back on, so im just oiling up the 2nd and 3rd as they are intacked and ready for a string.
I have a few other bits i must post, i also found another hand axe on my travels, i really should sort out a handle for that other one

Re: BOOTSALE FINDS
You can't go wrong for a quid Munchh
you don't need full power or range for a bit of fun in the garden and for technique practice, enjoy your bargain.
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

Re: BOOTSALE FINDS
But you can't practice technique if you can't draw to anchor and most adults have a longer draw-length then 20 inches...... Munchh, you know any small persons ?Plymtom wrote:You can't go wrong for a quid Munchhyou don't need full power or range for a bit of fun in the garden and for technique practice, enjoy your bargain.
BTW, a fast and dirty way of checking your draw-length.
Place the nock of an arrow on your breastbone and place your palms together as far up the shaft as you can reach. If your arms are straight and theres about an inch of shaft in front of your fingers then that arrow is a safe length to shoot with your draw.... This is assuming you draw normally and anchor on the lip or cheek (standard target recurve style)

Fair enough just shows my lack of technical archery knowledge,
