Could this cause a run on heirloom seeds?

I'm not sure, I had trouble finding another source of this story. So maybe in the short-term no, once the story breaks, there's no telling.

I grow heirloom varieties, but have never saved seed, maybe I need to learn.

Might also think about setting up a seed bank for the forums?

If this goes through the way the big corporations want it to, then yes, it's going to have consequences. On heirloom seeds in general and rare varieties specifically. This is about control of the food supply. Again

There are seed banks about. I would suggest that everyone set up their own mini seed bank, with a view to trading - not buying or selling, but trading - between ourselves.

I've just had a thought, does this include flowers? I don't know about anyone else, but I grow a lot of marigolds and nasturtiums as companions/ sacrificial plants. Will this legislation affect that too? And what about green manure?

I don't know about manure, but this will affect any and all seeds. Flowers, veg, the whole lot.

An update from the real seed company on this - http://www.realseeds.co.uk/seedlaw.html

There have been some revisions which have slightly improved the legislation, but it's still not good. Anything that criminalises people for wanting to grow their own food has got to be a breach of a fundamental human right. And I see the cold dead hand of Monsanto and companies like them in drafting this legislation; apparently, at least three multi nationals of a Monsanto like nature were 'consulted' over this. Lawmakers are supposed to protect us, not hand us and control of our food supply over on a plate :?

This is still ongoing, it's not over yet, and it's still possible that the revisions could be reversed. Indeed, the powers to reverse them at any point in the future are written into the legislation, so we need to watch out for that.

I have spent the last week or so ordering as many heirloom seeds as i can get my hands on (and afford) just to be on the safe side, this law is ridiculous, but how on earth would they enforce it anyway? i'm sure soon enough they'll be telling us how many breaths we can take a day
