Best oil/fat to store

Post by Duckie »

Hi all, loving the site, very useful! :)

I was wondering, what is the best oil/fat to to store long term and would it be prudent to repackage them somehow to delay them going rancid?

Thanks! :)

I am storing shelf stable Ghee as my fat.

I am looking into Coconut oil at the moment.:)
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

Coconut oil is a good choice (but expensive ?). You can also freeze olive oil and it'll last about 8 years - think it needs to be in a plastic bottle, I'll have to check where I heard that, you'd not want a bottle bursting in the freezer... ;)

Thanks for the replies. Funny enough I do have some (cosmetic grade) coconut oil which I used for soap making. :D

So olive oil is preferable to veg/sunflower oil then?

Ghee is a good idea, I hadn't thought of that at all.

I saw some army issue candles that were described as being edible if needs must. Has anyone had any experience of using these for cooking? Might be a good option for a BOB?

Tallow candles :o best left as a candle trust me. :)

Just take a small bottle of oil with you. Or, if you don't mind fish, a can of tuna in oil - two in one

I use these:

Round Make up containers for Salt and Pepper.

Empty soy sauce containers from Tescos Sushi for Tabasco sauces

make up bottle for oil

Washing liquid and a cut down sponge
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

Haha! I'll trust you on that! Thanks Pseudonym! Nice little kit there and I never would have thought of tuna in oil as I've always bought the stuff in brine. It's funny how many little habits can make a difference.

For camping and such I carry my cooking oil in a Urine sample tube (one I got just for that purpose I should add :o ), they're small, very tough easy to open or close and have a really positive seal (they need to have for their intended use, can't have leaks or contamination of the sample)

LTS......I'll have a plough through my sources and get back to you

ETA. Here is some information that might help, be aware though when they mention "partially hydrogenated vegetable oils" what they mean are Trans fats

If you hunt around in the ethnic supermarkets, you can find coconut oil MUCH cheaper than in other shops, presumably because they sell to restaurants as well as to regular joe bloggs like you an I.
