Air still

Post by Gone fishing »

Perhaps not entirely bought for prepping, but I received my Air still today.
It can be used to distill alcohol which I thought would be useful to make alcohol to run one of my camping stoves and also distill essential oils in homeopathic medicine.
It is a complete coincidence that it hypothetically can be used to make your own whisky.

If it is a cheap plastic Chinese one like the air still that I got first time around you may have bad tastes / smells from the factory process, but if it is stainless steel construction inside and made by / retailed by a good company you will be ok.

It IS a prepping item if you consider bad water to be an issue in the future and all you have is rain or river water, but you do have mains power.

If you do use the still for alcohol fuel, you may end up with a perfectly burnable 60% on the first run if you use a 14% wash.

If you carry on collecting your distillate, you can then re-distill it to get a higher percentage.

It is a Stillwaters still and is stainless steel.
I made up my first wash yesterday and hopefully it should be ready next Thursday or Friday.
I am aiming for 60% on the first pass, but I wil check it with a hydrometer.
I have an inverter for the car and also a small generator at home should the need arise.
After the initial investment I think it will cost around 70p per litre of alcohol which is not too bad.
I will certainly post my results of how it burns and tastes next week.
