Long term foods for storage (10>15years)

Post by Juggernaut »

Ok, so Ive just started prepping for myself and my partner after being made redundant and realising how fragile our lives can be some time.

I started prepping for food over the last few weeks, so far I have ;

Aquired two water tight air tight 40litre food grade blue pet barrels.
Bought ten 10liter pet food grade buckets.
Bought about 100 12" x 12" Mylar bags from the later day saints website.
Bought around 100 300cc oxy absorbers.

Now I've got the basics to store I'm going to make a storage larder area in my garage as its cool and shaded and finally took the steps to buy a little extra at tesco last night as they had offers on spam and princes corned beef!!!

Anyway I bought ten 200g tins of spam and four 340g tins of princes corned beef along with a decent quality 10kg bag of basmati rice.

I know properly stored in Mylar out of sunlight etc etc that these staples will last, not indefinatley, but for a very long time, at least the 10>15 years I'm aiming for without rotation.

My plan is buy and forget and have it just in case I'm not interested in eat what you buy and rotating, I know I like the foods I will buy, and I plan on buying another 10kg of rice and dried beans on my next visit as I feel it's almost too cheap not to have in my larder

What other tinned foods will last this length of time, would baked beans last this amount of time? What about tinned stewed steak (it's a fav of mine lol) also what tinned veg would be best to store/longest after BBE life

I'm aiming for around 6>12 months of food in house at any one time, along with a Berkeley filter for water purification.

Any advice would be warmly received.

Cheers

Most tinned stuff has a long life after the Best Before End date, it is a Best Before not a Do Not Use date.

If the tin is kept in a cool dark place and is inspected for rust or swelling it will probably last for a good decade, but the food inside won't be at its best.

Nothing, in my opinion, should be stored for any length of time on a fit and forget system, it should be inspected regularly to check for damage to the tins from rust or swelling, even if placed in an air tight container it is no guarantee it will be ok in a year, let alone a decade.
Stop, Read, absorb, understand, reply.

I understand what you are saying but I'd seen references regarding spam and corned beef sayin that it will last (given right conditions) indefinitely, just wanting to know if there would be any other basics meat/veg that is simier of has an over 10 year shelf life.

Cheers for the info though
