Fire pistons

Post by Maddosammo »

I've had a search around but cant find anything on here.

Has anyone had any experience with these things, are they any good, do they work etc..

Are there any flaws in the designs.

thanks in advance

No idea but as with any piston action it will wear I suppose, bit pricely for a fire steel init get some flint or even flints from the shop save loads of money get a empty lighter that you can replace flints remove the metal wind sheld spark it near wire wool should light it every time, I know am a cheap skate lol but that money could then go to more stuff you need.

Haven't used one myself, but they do work.

There are easier methods, but it's a good skill to learn. Your call if you want to try it, Sam.

Interestingly, ignition via compression (how fire pistons work) is how the diesel engine works and the fire piston is the concept that Rudolph Diesel based his engine on. :geek:

I found this, too: http://www.primitiveways.com/fire_pisto ... ntury.html

Yes, used to have a custom made one, probably the most difficult piece of kit to master behind the hand-drill

Had it made for me by this gentleman:

There's a reason matches and lighters were invented
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.
