Your Prepping for 2013

Food and money stores are highest on the agenda for the beginning of the year in case my job gets chucked what with the merger at work. And even if I keep my job, those two will be at the top of the list all year anyway.

I was lucky enough to receive money at Christmas and some of that will go towards a sewing machine in the next day or so - I want to learn how to make my own clothes and bedlinen as well as make do and mend what I have. I also want to do more knitting and to (finally!) learn how to crochet.

Long term plan for 2013 is to move back to my home town from London to be close to my family and have a quieter life, but that has been a plan for some years now and until the job market improves, it may well be a plan that goes over into 2014!

I will be continuing to add to food stores.

I want to look at permaculture in a bigger way this year, looking holistically so involving not just the garden but the whole family, living space etc.

A bigger focus on seasonal growing and hardier crops - using cold frames (haven't quite got the space for a poly tunnel but would be interested to see how you get on jansman!)

A thanks to a lovely starter kit as a pressie on my birthday I will be starting/learning to quilt.

Hi Le Mouse, I have found the best source of materials to work with is in Charity Shops. I have been making kitchen aprons to give to people as presents. Good luck with your sewing, it can be very rewarding and is a great way to reuse and extend the use of items.

Lots of work to do in the garden this year. It's a big country garden and got pretty overgrown while I was nursing the mum-in-law. Time to sort it out and re-lay some beds and the herb garden.

I hope to progress my prepping with;
- Getting my family onside more. (Working on them bit by bit
- Increasing the volume of our water harvesting (Haha after this year!! eh)
- Doing more with Perennial Vegetables (Have been learning/reading but need to source more and get them in the ground)
- Doing more outdoor cooking (to test the stove we have in store) and build a cob cooking oven.
- The list goes on....

I love this sort of thread! But there's so much that *could* be done. Okay, a list:
- water storage, yes, get the dratted water butts set up and filled (erm, with rain!).
- the bones of the garden are set, get the planting going.
- extra storage upstairs is sort of sorted. But the regular storage downstairs is a bit of a mess. This needs work.
- communications ability - radio club, radio licence, radio.
- check out the local shooting club. I've always had a yen to do clay pigeon shooting, maybe this is the year.
- thinking of what borderlands said a couple of posts further up the thread - yep, what if I *had* to bug out in weather like we've had this year - a cheapo tent, for me, is a really good idea. Milletts were selling pop up tents for £18 in their last sale, I'll wait till they're that low again, and go for it.

a quality sleeping bag, tent and with all this rain wellies and maybe even some waders, though my area as only flooded once in my memory , this year, going to research waders. always adding to my food stores
