Should I store water

Post by SuperDude »

Ok I know I've only been a member for a few hours, and already I'm on my second topic, but so many questions....

I live near 2 or 3 water reservoirs, I also have limited home storage. I've been assuming that living so near these water reservoirs (and living in the what seems the wettest region of the wettest country on the planet) I don't need to worry too much about water...

But after reading some posts on this forum, I'm thinking maybe I don't want to take that 5 minute walk, and leave my family unprotected, maybee that resivor will become unreachable (if theres a demand then the people with the guns will take ownership of it)...

So how do you store water, should I store it as it falls from the sky (and keep a few boxes of sterilization tabs for when I can't boil), plus a few liters ready to drink?

That's my approach, though maybe more than a 'few' litres ready to drink (ahem).

Me personally i won't relay on the reservoirs for being a source of water till maybe a few months into the shtf situation. You could have a few water butts and have the them collect the rain water but i would have a couple packs of water purfication tablets on hand. Plus i am mainly buying 5 ltrs of water instead of 2 litres as i think they save on space.

Get yourself a couple of water butts for starters. On top of that start building up your bottled water stocks. I buy 5-litre bottles from Tesco and store them in the garage. Even if they go out of date before I need them they can still be used for other things than cooking/drinking.I've got around 100 litres socked away in bottles alone.

You may want to look into other forms of purification too:-

Coffee filter to remove crap,
Hand pump ceramic filter to purify water,
UV steriliser,
and so on...

There is quite a lot on this site, and loads on-line in general.

But I do suggest you get at least one Butt.

We all need secondary or contingency plans when it come's to water, its something i know am lacking at the moment, but i would suggest having a life saver bottle to hand, and keep building up a personal supply of water, i have planed to only use 1.5 liters of water per day, I have a 90day supply at the moment that's about 135litres in mostly 1 liters and 5 liter bottles, i have no access to reservoirs but if i did i would still store water as much as i could!

Would the amount of power used be worth it for the amount of water produced/collected?

We get 4 1/2 litres in approx 12 hours out of our dehumidifier.

However, if power was scarce we wouldn't be using it to get water as the power could be used elsewhere. So I store water, have water butts and know where there are several water springs in my immediate locality.
