End of the World Treats

Post by Bladerunner »

So we all have our rice, beans, tinned meat, etc to keep us going after the solids have hit the airconditioning but what about those "pick me up" items?
Some people might be stockpiling alcohol but I have a sweet tooth so I did an experiment (you can thank me later).
I have some chocolate that someone bought me a while back and I decided to try it out and see if it was still edible.
It was a Ritter Sport Strawberry bar of chocolate, the type that has a filling in it, so even dodgier regarding it's suitability for consumption.
Anyway, I ate one of the bars (I have 4) in it's entirity and it tasted great. A little discoloured in one corner but it did not effect the taste at all.
Now for the good bit.
It was 7 years out of date!
I have now stocked up on a load of chocolate and vacuum seeled it in 1KG packs of 10 bars. (10 x 100g)

I am also thinking of doing the same with rock. Not the stuff that cliffs are made of but the type you get at the seaside. I remember eating rock when I was a kid that had been in the back of a drawer for donkeys years.
Does anyone live near the seaside? If so, how much is a stick of rock these days. If they are vacuum sealed I think they would last forever. The worst that seems to happen is they go soft.

Does anyone have any other suggestions about sweets or chocolate that last a long time with no major loss of taste?

Be lucky (and sweet toothed)

Dulce de leche - boiling an unopened can of evaporated milk for a couple of hours, or at least thats what they did when I lived in a Chilean household for a while :) it must last forever!

Anything full of sugar, acid(vinegar) or salt will last pretty much forever.

Nor me! So what the story with the choc then? Did you buy it 7 years ago with the intention of leaving it in a drawer to nibble on in the future??! We all have something lurking in the back of a cupboard somewhere don't we - or is it just me that stashes and forgets like a squirrel?!

My recent find was a bottle of raspberry vodka I made in 2007! It 'twas gorgeous!!

A friend of mine came over from Germany and brought me a dozen bars 'cos he knew I really liked it.
After eating 8 I got a bit fed up with it and forgot about it.
They even survived a house move 5 years ago.

Any advice on how much a stick of rock is? Someone must live near the seaside.
