Hey all,
I've noticed quite a bit of interest in amateur radio - some are interested in getting a licence whilst others are considering getting a radio without a licence.
I'm a fully licensed UK Radio amateur, and I'm willing to help anyone to pass their exam or offer advice. If there is enough interest, i'll register with the Radio Society as an official trainer.
BTW, This article sums up the basics of WHY!?? :

PM me if you want to know how to get a licence, why you might want one, or if you have any technical questions.

very interested as it might be the only way of contacting others in a shtf situation and knowledge outweighs wealth

OK! Well, there is a single multiple choice exam to take to get your foundation licence. You can get a book called 'foundation licence now!',that teaches you what you need to know, but you need to do a small course too at a local club. My club is free, and the exam was less than £30.gregpreston wrote:very interested as it might be the only way of contacting others in a shtf situation and knowledge outweighs wealth
What that gets you : one foundation licence (all bands and frequencies, max transmit power of 10 watts) and the know how to use it when it all goes pear shaped.
If there are enough people in my area I'd get registered and train people for nothing. I'm happy to help on line, by phone or whatever to help my fellow preppers out...
Not to mention about two hours of work on a website called hamtests.co.uk practically guarantees a pass.

It's interesting, and I can certainly see the appeal.

AWR, you will probably find most ham rigs are actually 12vdc rather than native 220vac, so plenty of options for power if there is no grid...
