hello all,
i know its best to store white rice over brown rice but what about brown/wholemeal pasta? is that the same as brown rice or is that ok to store. plus is there any dry food substance that you can not store in a mylar bag?! im currently baging up powdered milk, oats, rice pasta oh yeah and is it ok not to put an oxy abs in the sugar? i was useing PETE bottles for my food storage but i want to do this properly so after advice i have switched to mylar bags. now i just need to get people to buy me some more for christmas
good luck, stay safe
thanks
Storm
As sugar doesnt go off it doesnt really need an oxy absorber.
The brown vs. white rice issue is the oils or fats in brown rice which tend to go off quicker - so similarly any 'dry' food with a relatively high oil or fat content generally won't keep well (think quinoa was an example of this)
I don't think it'll matter if you choose brown / wholemeal pasta, might be worth checking if the ingredients include more oils in one or the other, but I suspect not.
You do not NEED to store in Mylar. I have rice and pasta in original packs, stored in 5 gallon lidded buckets. I date it and rotate it. All of it. In short we eat what we store. Mylar, oxy absorbers , etc. are relatively new here in the UK.
To me it is just another layer of expense and' faff'!
Of course, I am not criticising, but web forums CAN leave you wondering at your lack of 'stuff'.
