Hi I'm Sandy
I moved to Bournemouth from Essex Epping Forest about a year ago as I did not want to be near London any more and am prepping mostly for economic collapse at the moment
I am still looking for the perfect bug our location and think I will most likely bug out as my location would only be secure for a short while. I would love to bug in somewhere else if I can and have relatives in Devon.
I have been watching lots of prepping programmes for years but now want to start the more practical experiences. I have got the sas survival book and the book food for free but need to work on this side of my prepping more.
I have started the South West Coastal path walk with my daughter who is 17 years and think this will be a good route out of Dorset if need be.
It would be nice to know some UK preppers as I mostly read American forums and I don't think it will go down the same here and need a fresh perspective rather than get lots of guns and you are going to get raped etc.

Re: Hi from Bournemouth
thanks
Has anyone planned to bug out on a boat, I lived on a canal barge for 4 years and looking at all these boats in Poole Harbour and the islands in Poole Harbour it looks like a possible idea? I don't think more than 30% are locals boats as there are lots of people with 2nd houses here.

Hi and welcome Sandy you are right we are not so gun ho as our american cousins as our laws will not allow us to be and we reconise that we are on a small over crowded island so we have diffrent chellenges as well

Welcome Sandella - yep, its a different context over here from America.
I'm a bit nearer to London than you, as I'm in Sussex, but not so far from you either (I've done Bournemouth on a day trip for a meeting). Good to hear you're going to work on skills and routes.

Hello and welcome.
Hmm a floating bug-out residence, not thought of that.

Re: Hi from Bournemouth
well Poole Harbour is extremely shallow , so you can walk out to most boats, most of it is at knee height,
the only deep bit is in the middle which I assume they remove the silt from regularly so that the ferry can run

Hi there
Your point is well received, I have thought the same, I watch the Doomsday Preppers documentary on the NatGeographic channel, ankleyd while it is very interesting to get ideas to extract your own ideas from, the Americans (with the exception of the ones in small apartments ) in most cases have MUCH larger gardens and houses, ofts and often second homes or lodges somewhere. Correct also that in the event of a man made or natural scenario leading to chaos, the chances of someone carrying a gun in the states POST Disaster is most likely to be 9 in 10 compare to 3 in 10 or less in the UK, The other issue of course is the ammunition, where would you get that from? In the states the common choice of hand gun to choose would be one thaeir particular state and local police use (Like the Glock side arm) as more ammo will be around in deserted cars and Pol stations/precincts. Unless you end up near a deserted military establishment/barracks that will be unlikely that they will have ammo to suit the firearm you manage to procure through official channels. Cross bow or folding Bow with retrievable arrows would seem more sensible if you fell the need. Knowledge from hand to hand combat or self defence class, even (god forbid) knowledge of deadly impact points on the human body where a single strike with hand, finger implement would result in instant death or long disablement .
The Nat.Geographic are going to be showing (when I don't know) the UK preppers program so we should all watch that with interest, they have a web site for those without sky, no doubt it will be on you tube? Though I would be reluctant to air myself and where I live or bugging out to on national TV.
Your idea of the boats is very good, the more costly the boat looks the more likely it will belong to those from the cities with money and you could moor in coastal natural bays and sneak ashore for water and supplies salvage after checking out landscape with binoculars and local CB radio for traffic. Coastal path good too. Any less desirable thugs less likely to want that coastal rural route, they will prefer built up area to built up area so they can pillage on the way. If you do get a boat, make sure you have someone awake to hear and watch out for people in small boats sneaking out to you (and they will not have lights on!) Night vision?
Lots to think about, sadly the more money and space you have now the more you can buy to be prepared, but the people with the best chance will have a planned remote hidden house, shelter location that they may take few dasy to travel to on foot (or weeks) and your bug out bag should reflect that in weight size against needs and speed. If there is 2,3 or 4 of you all the better you can spread the load. If you have the space for extra of the small and light such as Cotton o reels, needles, matches, flit strikers..water filters for drinking bottles, these can be good for barter, exchange as currency.
People who may have been nice people before may look ok, but be wary who you trust.
