Lighting

Had a few lighting problems here at Chez Jansman. Fixed it temporarily but we need a serious rewire. Got an electrician on it. One room is without light. We have LEDS and some clip on bulb holders. Do you have GOOD backup lighting? Forget candles they are a fire hazard- absolute last resort.

so far have 2 parrafin lanterns ( and working on getting more). several dynamo hand held torches, wind up LED lanterns, one large rechargable lantern and several battery torches (hand held and head torches).
As we have internal bathrooms (no windows) we have LED lanterns in them as there's nothing worse than sitting on the loo and the lights go out!

Got a vapalux m320 for light and heat, several torches head/regular and a few battery powered wall lights. Im also confedent enough with electrics to rig something else up in an emergancy.

Future purchaces will include solar panels for lighting.

We got a lot of damage from lightening a year ago. Lost some big appliances and all kinds of electronics even though they we on good UPS's . Thank goodness for insurance. However I have had emergency lighting set up for some time. I use those round battery powered led stick up lights. You can turn them on wirelessly too. I have at least one in each room and two 0r more in the main rooms. Our power goes out a lot so they get a lot of use. They work very well and I would not be without them.

I will use a combination of 4 camping LED lanterns for working at night time:

and 20 solar garden lights (free of freecycle) for background light. I upgraded the bulbs and batteries so they are brighter than standard. They are great for lighting up stairs, bathrooms (much safer than having a candle in there when kids need to pee in the night) and for taking to bed. They have off switches and during the day I'll just sit them on a window sill to charge them up.

I've bought a few sets of solar security lights from B&Q. The solar panel is on a 2mtre wire, so it can be mounted outside the house to charge the lamps which can be mounted inside for use. I've not tried them inside yet but they light up my paths and doorways bright enough outside.

I am currently wiring 12v supplies to my house (have done nearly all of downstairs now) this is fed from Large deep discharge batteries hooked up to a wind turbine & Solar panel. Apart from giving me a very good back up lighting system i am using them a lot for everyday use and saving having to put money in the Energy companies pockets.

I am slowly building up my system at the moment but i hope to start running an inverter and get the stuff that is on a lot pc tv etc off grid as well.
