Here at Chez Jansman lastnight, all the lighting went Kaput upstairs. I have isolated the problem and it is ok now. However, the two emergency torches I have on the landing( hanging next to the fire extinguisher) DID NOT WORK! Shame on this prepper!
So I have just put new batteries in the maglights- not the best torch, but they make a good cosh! They are 3xc cell. Not a battery I use a lot of to be honest. I store my batteries in original packs in plastic containers in a cool outbuilding. Now I said I don't use a lot of c cells. The ones in line for use are dated 2008! And they work just fine.
Sooo... I reckon proper storage means they last that bit longer. I am sure we have a battery expert amongst us to enlighten me
As a footnote, those LED lanterns are bang on. LED is totally the way to go imo.
In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.
Robert Frost.
Covid 19: After that level of weirdness ,any situation is certainly possible.
I know it's a bit late, but stock up on a few squeezy LED torches (battery-free dynamo). They're cheap as chips on eBay (search for squeeze torch), so you could get a bunch. If you totally run out of batteries, you've always got something.
I carry one in my EDC along with my powerful battery torch, just in case.
If you have a costco membership or know someone who does then get your Maglite and batteries there its so cheap.
you get a 3 "D" cell led maglite and a small double A for around £30 including batteries!!! They also do Duracell batteries a great prices, cant remember how much but couldn't find any where else cheaper.
Duracell batteries with the tester strip are a good buy as they have a long shelf life as standard, and the very handy tester on it,
also a solar battery charger and rechargables are deffinatly a good idea, you could probably get away with a set of garden solar lights if you wanted a cheap way to recharge them
one of the things ive been looking at for emergency lighting is caravan 12v strip lights and a couple of large scrap batteries, combined with a couple of solar trickle chargers from maplins,
not an ideal or "pro" set up, but cheap and will let me see at night
