Re: Sum kind of shelter
very true as a ex army nbc instructor who also worked with the russian army. If you are prepping to live after a full nuc attack your wasting your time only the fish will be left & then only fish living in deep water

Would not worry about it pal. Stuff like unemployment and ill health come first in my book. Tonight the lighting circuit has gone upstairs. Dear job I think. In the meantime- emergency LED lanterns. REAL. Prepping!jimmyd76 wrote:Can anyone tell me where i can buy a fallout shelter or something similar in the uk as i have been on internet all morning and not finding anything suitable as most stuff seems to be america
thanks in advance
In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.

Still, one might as well know what to do in the event it does happen. It turns out that the concept that a nuclear explosion happening near you necessarily means you die is a bit exaggerated.diamond lil wrote:We need to keep things grounded and sensible, or we will end up losing the level-headed members who want to prep for far more likely shit than a nuclear war.
All nuclear radiation has a half life - this is a time (measured in seconds, minutes, hours, days or years) after which the nuclear radiation has been decreased by 50%. Nuclear weapons kick out a lot of radiation but a much of it has quite a short half life and will decay into stable and inert particles within minutes or hours. A lot of radiation is also stopped by concrete or soil. So the best thing you can do in a nuclear explosion (if you survive the blast) is to get under cover and stay there for two or three days. After this time most of the radiation which is going to decay will have gone. The worst thing you can do is immediately rush out and join the long columns of refugees slowly baking in the fallout. So it seems to me if you have a basement or cellar, simply going there and living off the preps you already have will be about the best thing you can do.
Here is an article about surviving a nuclear attack - there are many of a similar theme.

Here is an article about a family of hiroshima survivors - they were 1.7 kilometers from ground zero and all survived the attack. The girl and her brother who were in the standard issue bomb shelter were physically unharmed. Her parents who were outside the shelter were in pretty bad physical shape but all lived for decades after the war.

So I guess if one wants to have a bomb shelter something cheap and simple along the lines of a WWII Anderson shelter would probably do the job nicely. You can tell everybody you are just building a root cellar.

If you sink a container under a metre of soil as suggested you'll be buried alive
It can be done but the container needs serious reinforcement. They are designed to take load on the corners not the roof which is relatively flimsy. Its a serious project

So it can be done even if its not as simple as just sticking a box underground but if you have the space and the money then i think its worthwhile as we have had 2 world wars to think there wont be a third at some point is madness and wishful thinking if you have the means do it and soon.

It cant be too difficult as someone managed to construct a massive cannabis farm in this way. Entrance was through a caravan sat in the field above.

I hadnt considered the load on the roof but any subterranean structure would face the same considerations.
I also wanted to add that while a full blown nuclear exchange is unlikely, its not impossible. Add in less stable nations and the ubiquitous terrorist threat and a nuclear incident does creep up the list. As we live in sight of a nuclear power plant we have also considered our options. While a fallout shelter isn't one of them in our instance I could see it being appropriate. We do have a plan in that regard but it would be really last ditch.
As a matter of interest, I know of three properties in our area that do have proper fallout shelters. No mean feat considering the geology of the area!

Re: Sum kind of shelter
Interesting views and opinions here.
I've dealt with many people that want or have had shelters built here. The vast majority required a secure bug out location (whether just in their garden or at another undisclosed location) so they can remain safe.
I ask "Safe from what?" They reply "Just about everything". My response to this situation is to build a shelter that would protect you from the worse case scenario - nuclear attack. If it withstands this, then it will stand up to just about anything.
There are many people out there that are concerned - mainly families with young children. These wouldn't class themselves as preppers if asked but by the very nature of what their requirements involve, it makes them so.
