I am starting training for my ppl next month and was wondering if it would be an effective way to bug out as a lot of people dont know how to fly?

I have a few friends that fly, I'm sure if you can get an aircraft fuelled up and in the air when everything has gone to sh*t its a useful skill, the only down side is the cost. Even with a shared aircraft its expensive and fuel costs are going up year on year, as well as all other costs associated with flying. Its probably/if not in-fact the most expensive hobby someone can do. Even getting the licence and keeping it current is expensive.

Don't get me wrong its massively fun, I've been up a few times, but learning to sail and buying a small boat would be a more practical Bug Out option as at least you can live on it, and you can just leave it nearly anywhere, plus fuel costs are not really an issue. Not everything has to be done for prepping reasons, sometimes you just do something for the fun of it, like learning to fly.

Makes me think of John Cusack in 2012 and the (to me nameless) bloke who flew the little plane out of Los Angeles

Also makes me think of a friend who had some lessons in how to fly a helicopter - said it was the most fun he'd ever had with his clothes on, because the instructor turned the engine off and put it into a controlled spin!

Seriously - flying a plane for bugout reasons - not sure its sound. You've got to use airstrips, unless you know the terrain you're landing on really well. You're visible, and loud, and people are going to be curious and investigate you. Though the guy who wrote One Second After included some bits with a small plane pilot, so you never know.

If you're doing it for the love of flying, or for job prospects - then, fantastic! Go for it while you can.

My neighbour is a pilot and the manager of a small local airport. It's good to have connections because you just never know when they might be useful!

What about learning to fly a microlight? Very short take off and landing distances, no dedicated landing strip needed, uses normal unleaded and you dont need a huge hanger to store it.

Admittadly they have a very very limited weight/storage capacity but certainly worth it if you needed to get to another bug out location or something similar.

Oh I'm learning to fly as since I was a small lad I've had a passion for aircraft. I was just curious as to whether it would be good for bugging out.

I've often though about this, the only down side is the location of the plane if & when SHTF
unless of course you have a long drive.

There is a private microlight strip and storage close to me, this would give ideal coverage to get to any of the islands off the coast of S/Wales.

In any case a PPL for fixed & rotary is a great skill to have, keep it up and good luck.

look at this way, its an advantage over those who don't. If you do get your ppl, I would look at you prepping to include a BOB for flying.

Make sure you learn to fly a plane capable to carry u and family/friend/kids etc or what your status is, plus BOBs for all!

light aircraft are limited to where you can take off and land plus the fact if you are in the air at night who is going to light up the runway? micro lights have there draw backs too ! you cant carry that much ! that leaves helicopters , but again unless you are flying one of the larger ones you have limited space, its a good idea in theory but has its draw backs
