Tinned goods

Was wondering today what to pack food wise for 1 year storage so got looking on internet and found that undamaged tins are a safe bet with tins over 100 years old opened and eaten and they were ok.

I was looking for something that i can just put on a shelf and forget about until the time comes for use so think i will stock up on tinned goods so far we have 1000 tins to buy and as you can buy decent food cheap in a tin this will save me a fortune lol .

It might not be that easy. Food does deteriorate in tins, it stays edible for a long while past the best before date, but vitamin content, colour and texture will degrade. Probably best to rotate the stock so it does not get too old.

The main problem though is that if you just go out and buy stuff without a plan you may end up with a host of tins of food that you dislike. I once bought a couple of flats of baked beans cheap, when I tried them they were awful and I then had 23 tins more to eat.

The rule I follow now is: store what you eat and eat what you store.

*nods at Ian* and the other thing to remember is that dented and damaged cans often deteriorate quicker and are not as safe as you get far past the BBDate.

If you only want to keep it for a year look at the use by date there are lots of food that last a one to two years.
Just looked in my normal cupboard Peanut butter and tomato Ketchup have got up to a year beetroot July 2014 and just found a tin of tuna with a use by date of March 2015 and I have a jar of unopened honey with no use by date on it. It might take a bit of time sorting out the foods with the longest use by date but at lest you know you will be eating it at some point instead of haveing a store cupboard full of food that you do not touch.

sounds like a plan folks the missus agrees with you all she will do the organising as shes good at that i will do the buying lol M&S beans 41p and kids love them

I'VE GOT INTO THE HABIT OF CHECKING THE TINS FOR DAMAGE AND THE BEST BEFORE DATE WHENEVER I PICK A TIN UP. I'VE GOT SOME TUNA WITH A BBD OF 2017! IF IT'S GOT LESS THAN A YEAR ON IT I PUT IT BACK AND LOOK ELSE WHERE. AS OTHERS HAVE SAID - I ONLY STORE WHAT I LIKE TO EAT. THIS DOES RESTRICT WHAT I STORE SLIGHTLY, BUT AS LONG AS MY STOMACH IS FULL I'M NOT REALLY THAT FUSSED HOW OFTEN I EAT THE SAME MEAL. Read up on tinned goods and the only advice i can give is the tins with a ring pull top will not last as long as the sealed ones.

A LONG TIME AGO DURING A SPELL OF UNEMPLOYMENT I LIVED OFF SAUAGE AND RICE, BEANS CHIPS AND FISH FINGERS AND CHEESE AND MARMITE SANDWICHES

I used to do the rice with gravy for three meals a day and no gravy if I was low on funds. Its very unhealthy and I seriously don't recommend it.

You still need healthy veg and a lot of variety

Don't you just hate it when the ring pull snaps and you have to get the tin opener out anyway.
