Equipment fail

Post by In the Dark »

IBC set up day, finally got round to powerwashing & was going to coat the water IBC with black palet wrap & frame it in wood

Unfortunately Found it has a coating of food grade silicone grease all over the inside at the top  total bummer

Im going to modify it & use it to store coal, so its not the end of the world (just as well or Id be thirsty :D )

Moral is even if the seller says its good for water,it came from a bakery & it looks as clean as a whistle have a shufti inside, just in case

School boy error :)

Anyone else messed up a prep before?

Made myself a haybox for more efficient cooking recently. Tried it out last week and found that heat from the food helped release glue from the duct tape I'd used to hold the insulation and foil in place, hence the food tasted horendously of glue and was inedible. back to drawing board !

I made mine out of an old printer box (aka really heavy cardboard) stuffed with old jumpers and pillows... It doesn't look very braw or impressive, but it makes a mean bolognaise..... :)

Is there no way of cleaning the grease off? Seems a shame to give up so quickly.

Maybe someone on here can help you with a few suggestions.

Be lucky

If it is food grade, what is the problem?

Well Im not 100% sure it is food grade grease. Its horrible stuff (uber sticky, like silicone seal before it dries ) & there are various grades if it is. It doesn't seem worth the risk & I need a coal bunker anyway.(on a long list of stuff  ) Just puts me a bit behind with the water storage. I do have some 35L containers filled so its not dire just a workaround.
