Received a lovely lantern as a pressie this morning! First impression - WOW! It's so bright!

It's a Coleman exponent pack away lantern
Half price from Amazon at £11.99 just now
http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_nos ... rn&x=0&y=0

After some googling I found out the following:
It has a 2 or 3 Watt (depending on who's writing the review) LED that only uses 1 Watt of power.
Output is between 95 and 105 lumens
Runtime 5/6 hours high, 12 hours low, 75 hours strobe
And it packs away, automatically switching it off.
Open size: 125 x 69 x 47 mm
Folded size: 81 x 69 x 47 mm
220g with batteries

I have got a coleman single mantle petrol lantern and for those summer nights under a tarp shelter in your hammock they are superb, they do give off lots of heat and keep the underside of the canopy warm.. but even one thats brand new or just been redexed!! I would not consider for any enclosed area of any kind!!! same with vapalux the vapalux parrafin pressure lanterns just like tilleys are very functional reliable and not too fine a point but they are works of engineering art.
they are safer I would think than the petrol ones as I remember parrafin heaters in our home when i was small sometimes with all windows and doors shut in winter to keep the heat in and I am still here to tell of it!!
I dont own a vapalux or tilley yet cos cash is in very short supply but I intend to get one soon probably from evilbay!!! but I would have to see it working and get get some type of guarantee with them!!
the only other solution is buy one of the vapalux or petromax from new and that will sting in the wallet!! but have any of you seen the petromax ones??/ when they are done in all brass maritime pattern they are like something from 600 years ago they are awe inspiringly beautiful..
I saw one on a narrow boat a few mile from here a couple of years ago and it was stunning!!!
way I see it!! if we are going to get carbon monoxide poisoning lets do it in style!!!!!!! :)

You mentioned getting some solar panels.

I watched an episode of Grand Designs and a guy had built 2 houses on some waste land behind two rows of terraced houses. (That might help you find the episode)

He used LED lights in the entire house and it was very well lit, not dark or gloomy at all.

The entire wattage for the whole house? 100 Watts. You can buy LED lightbulbs that fit into standard sockets which are great while the power is on but if that fails I doubt you would need a particularly big Solar set up to run 100 watts for a few hours every evening but I am not familiar with Solar power so maybe someone else can answer that question.

I dread to think how much electricity we use in our home just for lighting but my earthship will be totally solar and wind powered and running LED lights when I get some land.

Be luck (and illuminated)
