if your in a steel room and your house is attacked and set fire too, that steel box will get hotter and hotter...like a sardine can..i think you may end up in a steel lined coffin...you really do need an escape route.

I suppose what we are talking about is what castle builders termed a 'sally port' - a concealed entrance that defenders (of a castle) would use to attack the besiegers - or escape the siege. ie the defenders would close the drawbridge & the beseigers would camp around the castle & hurl rocks etc. The defenders would use the sally port (often a secret passage from wthin the castle to - for example - the crypt of a local church) to attack / steal supplies from the besiegers)

From wikipedia:
"Targets for these raids included tools which could be captured and used by the defenders, labor-intensive works such as trenches and mines, and siege engines and siege towers. Sometimes enemy laborers were also targeted. Often, the besiegers' beer and food supplies would be stolen or, if they were too bulky to transport, urinated in "*

Perhaps this is the origin of the expression 'to piss on ones chips'!  Boom Boom!

I run a eight place decompression chamber in a building. Fire Brigade instructions are to decompress but stay inside the chamber as it is safer in than out. An inch or so of steel takes a lot of heating up and the building is concrete construction except for the roof joists so not too much material to burn in the first place.

Alternative hidden room with slide . There was an article with architects - Khul Design which had a hidden room and a slide that went down through the house

Pics and link below - If had the money and I would certainly like the slide idea

Or just use a 3" steel pole to slide down, would be far quicker

Ive thought about that mate; in the absolute worst case scenario I've wondered if something similar, or like a directed drain pipe, could be used to 'post' something on top of an unwelcome guest?

If TSHTF i intend to hide in my loft space. Its where most of my supplies are kept for the moment. My house is an odd design where there is an attic and a loft space adjacent to it which quiet long but cramped. There used to be a hatch up to it. But its been removed and I've had the hatch to it "hidden" in my attic. My plan is to remain covert and "dispatch" anyone who may be close to discovering me quietly.

My main worry about this strategy is fire. Fortifying a house can be for nothing. A couple petrol bombs will put an end to that. If i was discovered i can bash the wall out at the end of the loft space and jump down onto my kitchen roof and into my back garden.

I do have a thought about having some bales of razor wire with weights on the end to throw down the stairs and make them impossible to climb.

Although the attic isn't an ideal place to be in the event of an attack. I have wondered about digging out a hole at the bottom of my back garden and building some sort of structure that's concealed underneath to hide in if the house is attacked. I watched an American TV show about preppers and a company that builds bunkers for them. The last episode they built a tactical bunker for a client which was designed to foil attackers from getting in for a short time while the men of the house dealt with the intruders. The entrance was booby trapped with a falling panel with deadly spikes on and a handrail which doubled as a flame thrower. Obviously i couldn't match that. But maybe something big enough to hide in with one end like a pill box or something from the war to "eliminate" stray hoodlums from a safe position. And wait out in until they moved on. :geek:
