Crossbow help needed

Hi would a crossbow be a good investment/ and how long wil the 'string' last used or still in packet?

any ideas as I think this could be useful in a pinch
Anyone here know / go to a 'shooting'/ gun ' glub type thingy? I know nothing about it but I am interested in learning.
