who else to prep for?.

Post by i_am_jim »

i have got nearly enough stuff put aside for myself to live fairly comfortably for six months should i need it, as now it is only me that i am prepping for. i was thinking i have friends and family that don't prep they think it's not necessary. but they have children. should i put some bits away to insure my friends/family and their children have something food, water, etc?. i wouldn't turn them away if they turned up at my door. obviously i can't stock supplies for all my friends and family, do i just add extra for the children and my mates/family members can go hungry every now and then for being stupid and not listening to me?. need advice as this does play on my mind somewhat. i have a limited amount of medical supplies but dont know where to get some of the important stuff like antibiotics. can i buy these?. is it legal for me to do it?. any help on these matters would be appreciated. :D

See the post about fish antibiotics for legal method of getting stocks of them, hard to do this through your doctor.
If people won't prep it's a hard decision to make, you can't feed everyone if TFHTF. You could put aside some cheap 72-hr kits to hand out to help support such people, but it's simply impractical for most of us to expect to prep for every family member + friend. If you have 6months food set aside for yourself and you tell everyone about it, that is not 6 months food, its a few days + lots of begging visits.

.
Its still illegal to buy any antibiotics in the UK, when researching the fish mox etc I realised that most of the supplies come in from abroad so you do run the risk of a fine if you're caught importing, only a vet can supply legally ....sorry :(

do these friends and family live close by, Jim? if they live a long way away i shouldnt worry about it as in a national event they probably wont be able to cross the country to get to you. if they live nearby/in your locality, like you say, you cant prep for everybody who cant be bothered to do it for themselves...so just stock a few extra basic supplies that you can hand out.... and play "Lord Bountiful"

In a true SHTF situation where people are getting desperate, helping others might be dangerous to you and your family. The more people you help the more likely it is that one of their friends or family will ask them "where did you get that" - and they will get told (just like you, people want to look after friends and family). Rumours start and next thing you know you will have a queue at your door - begging with menaces. Once you have nothing left, they will never believe it and will attack you.

My advice is to maintain OpSec. Keep the circle of people who know you prep very small and sworn to secrecy. For the others - there is little you can do to help them long term and you cannot provide significant assistance other than for the briefest of preppable situations. If you really feel you must help them try and offer an excuse as to how you came to be in possession of a couple tins of beans two weeks after the shops have run out. Perhaps something like "Down the market I traded a silver coin my dad left me for them" etc.

the way i see it, there are a few ways to look at this
1.sod the lot of them for not prepping. harsh but in a shtfs it's survival of the prepist.
2.put as much aside as you possibly can and help your whole family for a week of two.
3.put some extra away for the kids (as they might not have a say about weather or not to prep, whereas the parents made the choice not to prep)
hope it helps

Actually we just like calling BDE a heartless old buffer ;) (Ya heartless old buffer !! )

This is a question I see on so many sites and the answers have to come down to the individual prepper. I've seen both ends of the spectrum. Everything from Over My Dead & Cold Body to It's mah Christian Duty to help everyone who asks ('cepting maybe persons of other beliefs.)

When we reached this stage, (and we were prepping for 7 at the time) we looked at the question as a family. I laid the scenario down and asked my wife & daughter to come back a few days later with a list of whom we should also prep for.

They both came back with the answer to 'carry on as we were'. The reasoning being along the lines of we're not gifted or especially smart. If we can see what's coming, then people we know are seeing the same signals as us and ignoring them. Humans being Humans as soon as you've been tagged as someone with stocks whilst others have nowt, your probably a walking deadman, friends or not. With kids especially. This is one reason a lot of prepper forums have a home/bol defence section.

Keep prepping and see how you feel at the 9 month mark. In the mean time, here's a link to a nice JDY tale download about what happens when people find out.
