Has anyone used the Seal a Meal Vacuum Food Sealer?

If yes, is it any good?

If no, what would you recommend?

I've got a vacuum sealer, not sure what make without looking at it, I must admit to not using it very often but yep they're very good.

I still have a load of bags actually I must read up on it more, I used to use it when I lived on my own as I just can't cook for one, there's always too much so I'd seal meals down for later, when a couple of the kids invaded I just cooked normally, and now I only have the one here but there's still no need to use it really.

Now you've mentioned vacuum sealing I'll have to dig into it more as 'hopefully' I'll be producing alot of veg this summer with not much room for storage :idea:

Will keep an eye on this thread I think. :D

I don't have a seal a meal, I have an Andrew James vacuum sealer though. I use it in the kitchen and for my preps. Whenever I put a large piece of meat in the freezer (like a roasting joint size) I vacuum seal it to prevent freezer burn.

One thing I've found is that I prefer the rolls to the bags. With the rolls you can make them whatever size you need so you're not wasting a massive bag for a KG of dehydrated veg.

I love both my vacuum sealer's.

Not sure what makes they are though. One was bought in Debenhams and the other a fiver at a car boot. I use em in the kitchen for preserving prepared spuds and raw veggies etc. Loads of uses for preps. On a sad note I've recently used them to pack up my in-laws memories (school certs etc) prior to storage as we empty the house.

Get the 3L bags on a roll from Lidl. They can cope with most items you may want to pack and are quite strong as well.

If the bag is too big for the item. Move it up. re-seal it and rip off the excess.

Just dug it out, it's a FoodSaver Vac 420, still have bags and got a roll too, all FoodSaver markings, don't remember buying em tbh and wouldn't have known where to get more, but as Ogre mentioned Lidl I'll give them a try. :D

These ones you can vac, freeze, then boil, micro whatever the contents, dunno if that's the norm for Vac bags? No idea how much they were it was a couple of years back I bought em I reckon? :(

Will see if I can get the manual for it online and have a read up, if they're good for veg that's cool, meat doesn't last long enough here. :( But I do get a fair bit of free fish from a couple of mates boats, I soooo need another freezer. :(

Just measured one of these vac bags I have here and they're 8" or 205mm wide is that pretty much a standard width?

Just thought of another use for these bags/rolls, seed storage. They keep for between 2 - 5 years depending on species anyway, so surely vac storage would prolong that until you get enough crops to be able to let some go to seed to replenish stocks?

Maybe flour too, flour doesn't last too long at all really in the scheme of things, I wonder how long you could keep it vacuum packed for, making your own from wheat/corn/maize, etc., is NOT an easy task, very time consuming.

Meh just thinking out loud. :)

Better to vacuum pack wheat than flour, then grind when needed. :mrgreen:

Have you tried grinding wheat to make flour TG, it's a royal pain, unless you've discovered some nifty gadget of course? :D
