Yep I think you're right, in many ways it has already started.
I believe we are being frog boiled, that is, incremental steps away from the world we once knew.... ever so slowly, so the public become conditioned to the new level of "normal"
But I also believe you there will be one day in the near future where even we as preppers are shocked

Think of it like a lion or a cat getting ready to pounce and strike...

The first 90% is positioning and preparing
The next 9% would be when it shows its teeth and leaps in the air
The last 1% is when the actual tearing to shreds to start

Up until the last 1% of the time, no threat was seen, no pain was felt, nothing.

All the damage (probably death) was done in the last few seconds of the unlucky preys entire life

So the frog boil and death by a thousand cut BOTH are true

Slow descents are tricky things to plan around because of the long timescales involved and the chance of you being identified as a prepper increases. In a still functional society of gradually skinnier people, think great depression, the still well fed stand out. A decade of decline is a long time to navigate through.
