I think I will try it. If it works in snowy upstate New York I guess it could work here too. Some seeds actually do well with being frozen and thawed as they do if planted outdoors I don't know if soda bottles will work - or if opacity is required.

Anyway, thought I would post about it. I would love to hear of others trying it out or if you've already done it.

Upper New York state is roughly on the latitude of the France/Spain border. For example, the top end of New York state (Buffalo) is further south than Marseille in France.

It is my understanding is that the winter planting/growing is more a matter of light than heat. So upstate New York is getting the same light as the south of France - its just a lot colder.

That is not to say it can't be done - you just have to choose plants that are a bit more tolerant of lower light than the ones specified for NY or perhaps plant them a couple of months later. In the south of the UK our Feb light levels are probably roughly equivalent to those of NY in December.

There is a good book on the topic called "The Four Seasons Harvest" by Elliot Coleman that is a must read if you really want to get into winter gardening.
