In terms of survival chances, has anyone considered what their immediate area would be like? I know in my area, the level of preparedness I would expect to be extremely low. This influences my onward decisions on preparations and actions in a SHTF event.
I think you will find, in any area, that the ratio of people being unprepared for ANY event is much higher than those that are prepared, i may venture to say probably about 99%-1%

definitly.

I know people who have empty cuboards and just buy food to eat that day. I dont mean poor people either, well off people who just live like that.

people that live IN town and pass the shops every day have been known to shop daily, other people shop weekly, but they all have either empty cupboards or throw out a lot of food because they bought too much and its gone overdated, thats one thing that makes my blood boil-throwing out food!

With a big SHTF I guess 1/15 chance of survival at 5 years might be as good a guestimate as any. Iron age Britain had an estimated population of 3-4 million. Depending on the degree of environmental damage and social cohesion it might be possible to stabalise population decline around that level? With a bit of prep and good luck I guess you improve your odds of being in the 6 in a 100 left standing. Inevitably a bit traumatic making the short list. If it gets that bad I suspect many would give up as the reasons many survivors give for struggling on against the odds would already be dead or gone?

Definitely, as I've said before, I will only try and survive as long as my daughter is alive, once she goes, I'll be following shortly, I really cannot see myself turning into a cannibal to survive. If I came across a tall building still standing, or a deep enough water puddle, I would make use of it and stop the personal suffering - sometimes you just gotta look at the situation and think to yourself "am I really prepared to go through this just to survive an extra day?"

This is my personal opinion - please don't rag me out for it.

i guess everyone will look at it(the event) differently, some may not want to carry on if they find the situation unbearable, personally i will go on to the bitter end and go down fighting, i cannot see me doing anything other than that.

Not at all, we all have our own reasons for wanting to survive, many of us might act differently when those reasons are taken away.

I remember when i was a kid in the 70's asking my parents what would happen to us when Russia "dropped the bomb", they replied that hopefully we would all (the family that is) be right underneath the bomb as the aftermath wasn't something they wanted to face especially with children

Suicide will be a massive percentage in the early days, esp with the old.

The more people who 'opt out' the easier it will be for the ones would want to live.

Thus my % increases which is good.

He kills a moose or some large animal but can't gather what he needs and start a fire in time to cook it before flies get to the meat. (I wont spoil the film but its great watch it).
Simple ignorance killed Mccandless.

If memory serves he ate posion berrys that killed him.

you have to know what your doing with wild food as ignorance can kill, i went on a "fungi foray" course just before christmas, there are plenty of mushrooms out there but most will either kill you or make you very ill, the edible % is about !% so there is plenty of room for error.
