How does the "low tech" solution "cost more money" ?

Because you have worked out what it costs to boil a kettle / run a electric blanket? ??

I have two issues with this...

1) a ONCE boiled kettle will fill two hot water bottles that will last ALL NIGHT under thick duvets.

2) "Off Grid" a fire will be on constantly when its cold, wether it be a wood burning stove or one of your ethanol numbers, therefore heating water COSTS NOTHING

If your point is that its cheaper to turn off your central heating and warm only your bed in winter, Your right lol

But if your point is a "electic blanket" is a prepper item and a offgrid option id have to polietly say i think its a non-starter.

We don't have either in use, so must be saving a load

Once in I am warm in a few minutes, Bottles will either be rubber of china, neither keeps warm for very long in reality, and the china ones tend to be a fair lump.

Easier answer is a brick warmed on a fire and wrapped in a towel, just like the good old days

Using what volume of water?
Did you take note of the wattage of the kettle and the volume of water that was used in the kettle to provide precisely enough water for ONE hot water bottle?
Did you then do a bit of primary school level mathematics (yes children, E energy used for time T uses E x T power) to get a fix on how much power (Watts per Hour) was used in terms of electricity to fill up ONE hot water bottle?
Then did you read the instruction on the electric blanket and then do the same calculation with the wattage of the electric blanket?

I did.

I saw that it used LESS power and therefore LESS money (for those who are ON grid, and less power out of a bank of batteries for those who are off grid) to use the electric blanket.

If you are off grid and want to have the same quality of lifestyle as an on grid person, you can still use most of the same thins that you used on grid, but you have a budget, that budget is the store of power int he batteries that you have got.

Its an option, but you got to get your mathematics right. Your power in your batteries is like money.

I have had a play and using a kettle to boil enough water to fill a hot water bottle! Uses 0.15 kwh or 150WH doing this on a battery bank would put a strain on the batteries! Especially if done regularly! Using an appliance that uses 20 watts an hour over the night say 6 and a half hours would use the same amount of energy but is much less detrimental to the life of the batteries!

In a shtf situation yes fire will be a better option for the hot water bottle! But in Savin every last penny so it can be ploughed into other preps! By being off grid! The lesser load will save him more money in the life of the battery bank!

It looks like there has been the usual "Crossed wires" in this thread, nick is looking at it from one angle, i.e. from a frugal point of view in the world "today" whereas tfish is looking at it from this being a preppers forum and if it isn't the end of the world it doesn't belong.

Sometimes all the "end of the world" carp gets in the way, "prepping" can be for anything from a power cut to a house fire, a flood to a divorce, it isn't all about the break down of society and gangs on the street raping and pilaging every house in the city
