Re: Question?
fuel for the car (not just a tank full but jerry cans as well).
plywood (or similar) to board up windows.
self defense stuff - whatever I could get
ummm, I'll come back to this... as my list is too long- what about everyone else?

Re: Question?
you need to put in place alternative heating, cooking and lighting NOW, not after, the power goes off.

Re: Question?
That's a hard question to answer but I guess I'd be after fuel, tools, people and weapons for hunting as well as self defence. I would hope to have most of what I expect to need beforehand so it would be a case of as needed through breakdown or unexpected problems.
Of course its easy to get caught out so if it happened today I'd also be after alternative power sources and an improved location

Re: Question?
depends on the situation. for some people a 72 hour bag with food, water, clothes and money is all the preps the need. Of course if you're prepping for something more serious the list gets a bit bigger: 1 year of food, 6 months of water and ways to get/purify more, seeds, power, heat, medicines, tools, weapons, it can go endlessly.
I started with extra food and bottled water as well as extra prescription medication. it all depends on what you think will happen

Re: Question?
Land to grow crops on.
A source of firewood.
A river with fish in it.
Anything useful lying around that could be collected and stored.
Knowledge of who and what's going on around me !

Re: Question?
I plan to have most of what I would need for the first month. After SHTF it would be information and intelligence. You can't make good decisions without good information. After that, it is time to assess the status of the area, length of time I estimate to need to survive etc. I plan on knowing where I can get replacement supplies of all types from the local areas and once I establish the state of play I would plan to put into effect resource gathering as needed.

Re: Question?
Alternate means of heating was a big thing for me - we got a paraffin heater last December and it was a great load off my mind. So, heating and fuel for it.
Lighting
Communication (not necessarily 3rd) - radio, CB, etc
Means of preserving food
Tools etc for repairing things and gardening
I have to say that the plywood idea for covering broken windows etc is a very good one.
