Hi from the South of the UK

Post by JohnRio »

Hi, I'm JohnRio,

Have always had thoughts re. prepping and have always put bits and bobs aside. It helps that I lived in a caravan for two winters and on a boat for three, so I'm pretty handy and know how to build a fire etc.

Recently started to get a bit more serious about prepping, what with the obvious crisis building momentum, I'm expecting SHTF in the next year or two. At least as bad as the hyperinflation and instability of the 30s.

Cool to find a UK site re. prepping, I look forward to reading and sharing knowledge :D

Hi  - think living in a caravan in winter would be horrible, but good experience.

Wasn't all that bad. They were two relatively mild winters (didn't get below -4'C) and I tore out a seat, built a hearthplace and fitted my wee pot-bellied stove and burnt wood and coal in it all winter long!

Also, I was in my late twenties then. Body could take a lot more grief. I'm forty now, not so much.

Living on the boat I had a Rayburn for heat. Winters '07/'08, and '08/'09 went ok. And then we had the dreadful (for the south) winter of '09 /'10. Nights of -15'C, and three months of snow. After that I sold the boat and went to Spain for a winter to recharge!

Ah, no I sold the boat to pay for my Spanish trip. (There's a massive import tax on boats coming into Spain, plus there's no network of suitable waterways to river-gypsy around on the cheap like there is in England).
