I had the jab a few years ago with no side effects whatsoever. Maybe I was just one of the lucky ones!

If any members are over 65 and contemplating getting a flu jab, take a shufty at this.

I found the sugar and vitimin D information interesting. I try to get as much sunlight on my skin as possible every day. Even on cloudy days you still get some benefit.

I do not know if this vaccine is used in this country but I am guessing that some vaccines are universal so you could do worse than phone your local surgery and and ask them which flu vaccine they use if you are over 65.

I am curious to know if anyone, of any age, who has had the flu jag (apparently that is Scottish for jab, see I am paying attention ;) ) has asked their doctor exactly which one it is. I doubt it is something people would ask their doctor.

This year's vaccine is seasonal flu combined with H1N1. We can either take it or leave it, Mercola's site is about an American vaccine, totally different to the ones we use here. Which might or might not be good, but this isn't the place to talk about it. Try FluTrackers.

I'm also interested in the Vit D information - if it's the case that Vit D builds a strong immune system and we're simply deficient in sunshine, you have to wonder why there is a big outbreak of flu in Australia.....

'As at 30 September 2011, there have been 24,049 confirmed cases of influenza reported to the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS) in 2011'

I think flu doesn't disciminate, it hits healthy and sickly alike. Of course, the sickly are more likely to succumb earlier (which sucks, personally speaking) but having a strong immune system won't prevent you getting flu, don't think it works like that.

No, a high level of vitD won't stop you getting flu but it should stop flu going into pneumonia. I got that on FluTrackers where there were a few medical people checking stats and researching that.

Mercola has some great information. Unfortunately some people won't accept information from anywhere other than what they consider to be official channels. Rather like Daily Mail readers who have no idea they are being spoon fed. Or BBC viewers who believe they receive unbiased reporting. The vitamin D acquired from sunshine is natural, and builds the immune system, needles filled with mercury and monkeys red blood cells shot in your arm are not and do not. Of course this is only my opinion, hope I don't get in trouble for having one of those.

I would have thought, the stronger the immune system, the less a virus would affect you. We are being bombarded by bacteria all the time. weak immune systems succumb, strong ones do not.

Are you saying it is not worth taking vitamin D to ward of cold and flu then?

Cytokin storm is when a good immune system attacks the virus and also goes into over-drive and kills the infected person, so a good immune system might be a downfall.

The 1918 pandemic affected the middling age groups, old and young were affected but because of medical history or lack of it they were to a greater degree spared.

I take a high dose of Vit C daily, no colds for over a year.
