paraffin lamps

Post by diamond lil »

We have some nice paraffin lamps and are testing them for powercuts. One seems to smell a bit. Is there a knack to stopping them smelling of paraffin?

I've been told that lamp oil burns cleaner, with less smell than paraffin, but I haven't tried it in my Vapaluxes.
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

The paraffin I buy from the hardware store here says on the tub (gallon tubs) that it has an ingredient that makes it less stinky. :) I still get the paraffin smell but to be honest I'm used to it and don't mind it so much.
I've tried lamp oil but found it doesn't burn so bright as paraffin, so take your choice. :)

Maybe use lamp oil instead. i have known people use lamp oil in hurricaine lamps that were bought from the local 99p stores. I guess olive oil might work in them too.

My olive oil jam jar lamps are doing well and I can get 1 Litre of olive oil for £1:50 ish at certain budget shops

Lampoil has less odour than paraffin. But if you've used paraffin in a lamp, the wick will smell eventhough it's now burning lampoil.
Wicks don't come easy nor cheap. I've never tried washing one to rid the smell but it might be worth a try.
Having lived with only candles and oillamps for a few years at the BOL while building it up, I tend to not notice the smell after a while.

Ok thanks for this. The big lamp smells sometimes and not at other times, I dont know why. Can I ask if anybody has links to ebay or a good site that sells wicks/lamp oil ? I have a wee local hardware shopbut she only keeps one size of wick and it's too big for the other lamps.
