Food grade BPA free plastic containers are your best bet. 10 litres is a good size. Wash with a drop of washing up liquid first time. Then steralise with 2 Milton tablets. I put 2 x 33mg Oasis tablets in the water I store. Swap out after 6 months, re-steralising first. Leaching of plasic will be minimal compared to what you breathe in, and remember, this is for SHTT, or at least a burst water main, not day to day consumption.Sgt PhilCo wrote: ↑Sun Dec 07, 2025 9:09 amMaybe I should be buying the storage containers from Amazon, peeing in my ad-blue tank and saving a tenner all round… what a crazy construct we inhabit… apparently pig urine is used massively in lots of different product… who has the job of collecting this??Pee extract?
Ultimately though it sounds like with good washing out and sterilisation the container should be usable, just have to wonder about any toxicity from the plastic itself. My wife is convinced plastic leaches into stored products over time, especially liquids; does anyone know about this?
I’d assume some mild toxicity is better over a few weeks than no water at all in any case!

Welcome! (I'm late, sorry).
Good idea to focus on water as one of your first priorities. How interesting to have a well, disused or not
As far as storage is concerned, I'm with both you and your wife - as little new-use plastic as possible, because leaching is an issue. Though can I just say, take note of any Andy who gives you a safety warning - we have a few (Andys, that is
) and they're extremely knowledgeable in all sorts of areas.
That said, because of my arthritis, I've limited myself to 2 litre bottles - I do clean and refill them every so often, but not six monthly, that's too much for me. Water can be "brought back to life" by pouring it from one container to another, re-oxygenating, of course.
Sadly, I also agree with you that some toxicity is better than no water at all. You can recover to some degree from microplastic pollution I've been hearing, very much dependent on a fresh food diet. It's better than the alternative of dehydration and death ....
(sorry!).

Re: Hello
Thanks for all the input so far. I have washed out the ad blue container, and once the label is off it looks remarkably like the UN approved containers available on Amazon. Washed with detergent then sterilised with a brewing cleaner I already have. I’ve filled it from the mains water straight from the tap and was about to add the oasis tabs when I wondered if there is any logic to adding them at this stage? The label says to add them then wait for 30 minutes before the water is safe to drink. Is there any downside to not adding the tablets to the water until I want to use it? If I am cycling it out every 6 months, this may mean I don’t have to use the tablets at all if the water gets tipped or I use it for flushing toilets etc instead of drinking. If I add the tablets after 4 months then drink it is there any increased risk to me?I put 2 x 33mg Oasis tablets in the water I store. Swap out after 6 months

I've expressed that opinion, before, but didn't want to argue the point.Sgt PhilCo wrote: ↑Tue Dec 16, 2025 7:35 am... I wondered if there is any logic to adding them at this stage? There is the upside that you are not throwing tablets away at every recharge.
Congratulations on having the faith to set aside any queasiness about using those bottles.

I think also that since we have a sewage treatment plant here it would be better not to follow the 10 litres of steralising fluid with 10 litres of biocide laden water, especially when cycling several containers at once every 6 months; would likely kill all the good bacteria in my tank. There is the upside that you are not throwing tablets away at every recharge.

If I need water to flush toilets the ad blue containers will be first in line, if I need water to drink and it’s all there is, pretty sure I’ll be glad to have it. If I can get the well working and run some tests, the containers might become redundant, but for now I have one shiny ex pee pot set aside for emergencies and will be adding a few more over time

Re: Hello
I've some new 25l barrels and a couple of old 25l screenwash barrels of a similar type the perfume seems to linger but as clean water worst case it'll smell a bit funny and get used for washing / cleaning and save the none odour tainted water for drinkingSgt PhilCo wrote: ↑Wed Dec 17, 2025 9:45 pmI think also that since we have a sewage treatment plant here it would be better not to follow the 10 litres of steralising fluid with 10 litres of biocide laden water, especially when cycling several containers at once every 6 months; would likely kill all the good bacteria in my tank. There is the upside that you are not throwing tablets away at every recharge.
